mk1 focus rs or mk5 golf gti
#9
I would go for the focus, would feel a bit more special and definately be more fun to drive. Would think kept clean it will retain a decent level of value even with racked up miles.
Golfs are ten a penny, bloody everywhere, but I rarely see a frs out and about.
Does come down to what you want from a daily driver though, and some of these gt tdi have good grunt and still bring in good mpg. They may be more comfortable and blend into the crowd so park it anywhere.
Whats important to you
Comfortable drive or fun drive
stand out or blend in
good fuel or couldn't give a hoot
residual value
mile muncher work horse or car to try and keep as mint as possible.

it is for daily use, currently using the FRST which is fine, its plenty big enough for now, i just find myself being precious with it, and think something more modern is the order.
have been trawling for focus RS's but still biding my time for the right car.
as it stands i'm not doing all that much mileage and i really couldn't give a stuff about fuel, the quicker the gauge goes down the bigger the smile!!
i think a focus is something that can be left almost anywhere, after the fiesta got broke into, as its a total piece of piss to get in them, i'm careful of where i leave it/take it, sounds daft, but i think even though the focus is newer, i don't think i would be bothered so much where i left it
think i'm swung, hunt is on for a focus

the other thing to think about is the condition of the car you buy, if used everyday, things happen, no point paying over the odds for a minter that may get dinked and dented.
A cheaper still good looking but more used frs may be a good purchase provided it is a mechanically looked after car.

Loads of Mk1 FRS on the market at the moment and tbh you can easily bag an average miler or even a modded example for less than Ł10k as chop says - however don't be surprised if you see a few overpriced ones for sale as well as some people are still under the impression that they are still worth Ł12k+
Might be worth also keeping an eye on the For Sale section of the RSOC forum as there are normally a couple of decent examples there

lets put it in factory figures:
power gti = 150bhp or 180 bhp for an 30th ani
212bhp for focus rs
now lets look at performance times:
0-60 gti= a eye opening 9 secs for 150bhp and 8 secs for the 180bhp 30th ani! wow
0-60 focus rs = 6.5 secs
ok and now for the most important thing! the chassis:
On the mk4 it is CRAP t oveweight and designed to be driven softly and not overdone!
focus RS has a chassis that disgraces alot of high performance cars even now!
so now tell me what bit of GTI 1.8T do you think is good?

Are you actually serious in thinking the gti with the 1.8t which is a mk4 shape would be better than a mk1 focus RS?

BTW the Mk4 Golf GTi 1.8T go alot better after a remap Much like the FRS, however they wont get near to 41 MPG on a run which in an everyday car is desireable...

Read the thread correctly and you will see he is on about the 2.0TFSi Mk 5 Golf GTi which has around 200bhp....

however i think you need to READ MY REPLY TO THE GUY WHO SAID THE BEST GOLF IS THE 1.8T! even a simpleton knows that the mk5 golf range did not have any 1.8t engine!
And by the way read the thread it doesn't mention anything about a chipped/mapped frs or gti!

if its just a car to comute in, go shopping in and not to fussed with car park dings and stone chips id say the golf with a remap, there a comfy car to drive, and could park it anywhere.
but
if its a weekend type car that you want to keep looking its best.. then id go with the Focus
