Default what size is battery cable?

been trying to find some battery cable to wire up the 3dr.

now one place, a farm shop only has some very excessive sized cable that is very expensive.

other place i found that you can buy it per meter is maplins, but its almost £4 a metre.

now, looking on halfords website they sell sets of jump leads that i will cut up and use the cable from, for about £16 for a 10mm cable, or £20 for a 16mm cable?

whats needed?

batter is an odyssey 30 in the back of the car, need about 3m max cable.

cheers

I would suggest you consider at least 25mm^2.

have a look at this thread, and follow some of the links :

As above 25mm2 minimum - especially if battery in boot. Would go for 35mm2 personally.

yeah i would say get the biggest you can
and as you only need a short amount dont skimp on it.
esp to the alternator, and the starter.

well, its from the battery to the kill switch. after that its std ford stuff ill be using.

so cant see the point of using cable twice as thick as the rest of it lol

i ran 4awg cable from my battery to starter and alternator,
and i used to get problems when hotstarting, it was like the battery was dead, not always, just sometimes
since changing to 0awg it doesnt happen anymore.

The longer a cable is, the greater the voltage drop is for the same load

stu also didnt say what car it was, and it could have been that the starter was fucked lol!

saying that, my starter is very close to the down pipe, so will have to do something about that lol

Can you not use Audio cable?

Some of the 4AWG, 2AWG, 1AWG or 0AWG should suffice depending on the current you want thru it?

im sure 4awg is 4awg, audio or not lol

this stuff does look like audio cable tho as the insulation is transparent. i asked for totally black and red, but they dont do it.

much gayness!

The best cable to use is 35mm if your running to the boot , because of voltage drop especially when starting a car. I use cable that we build control panels with which is called tri-rated cable , its like a cross between speaker cable which is multistranded and electrical (solid cores) . 35mm will have about 35/40 strands making it very flexible and which can take high amps/voltages . 35mm is rated to about 130/140 amps so is ideal for a car , for 300amps like posted earlier this would be 185mm which is about 1 inch thick so i would be very dubious if the cable could handle 300amps, give us a shout if you need any as ive got some left over from my old car
cheers paul

as for earthing , 1 from the battery to the shell , 1 to the inner wing from battery , then loop from that to to gearbox and engine

well, the 4awg is to run from behind the passenger seat to the master switch on the dash

from the master switch the std ford wiring is used to the starter, alternator, and power circuit of the car.

the car only has a lighting circuit, and the stack guages

zetaboostboy, 50mm csa cable at 24v will carry around 315 amps. I assume your control panels will be either 240 or 415 so your cable will be rated appropriately.
