As above, i am getting used to the fact but i am offshore and my missus is at home by herself and is very upset. I have tried to explain to her that he wont know any different and we will just need to follow the docs instructions. He will get along fine and be able to do everything that we all do, he just needs to be taught slightly different, does any body have any experience in this. My mums trying her best to find out info while i'm out here and they are making an appointment for us to go in and discuss whats going to happen but i have no experience in this at all. I dont know anybody thats deaf....i dont think any of my mates know anyone either!

Any help would be appreciated,

It's one of those things that seems so massive and difficult, but you and you family will adapt and it will just be part of your life. A friend has a deaf child, and he's a perfectly happy normal little boy.

We taught our kids 'baby sign language' before they could talk as it makes communication easier, and it's no different to teaching them to speak, you'll just learn sign language and will have a normal happy relationship with your child.

I'm sure everything seems dark and unfair at the moment but it will get a lot easier.

I actually always wanted to learn sign, funny how these things turn out. I'm ok with it, I have a boy already thats 5, maybe thats why i am dealing with it better but its Cheryls first baby and its hitting her hard. Really worried about her while i'm out here. She has lots of family and they are all great, so shes got plenty of support, still feel like a dick out here though!

Life can be an unfair bitch at times, but the main thing is he's otherwise ok. I used to work with a two lads who were deaf and they were just normal lads. They were a good laugh and could lip read so well you'd struggle to know they were actually deaf. I'm sure everything will work out fine bud.

i work with a guy who was born deaf.
2 years ago he had an implant in his head just above his ear and a kinda head set thingy like a phone one. he can hear ok with that and lip reads as well.

Will he be death for life, or is there a chance he might gain some hearing as he grows up? As you say he will know no different, but it still must be awful especially working away. We've got our second due in 8 weeks, you never give these things much thought. chin up pal.

They say in his left its totally deaf but his right he can hear very loud noises, Cheryl told them that i had clapped my hands before and startled him so he must be able to hear something, they said he felt the air pressure!! Amazed!!! I know he can hear something in his right but it must be very loud, i can click my tongue pretty loud and that startled him but obviously there wouldnt be any air pressure difference.....or would there? Na couldnt be eh.

I said to Cheryl that it'll probably be one of those things where it'll get better as he grows up and she said the docs have already said that it wont, so dont get your hopes up. I take it they hear that one everytime they tell someone their kids deaf eh!

Cant offer any advice I am afraid but as a father who is awaiting results to see if my 2 year old is Autistic I can guess how you are feeling.

I dont see it as a problem, it may not look like it now but in a few years time you will look back and all will be fine.

I had massive problems with my ears when I was a small child, and now only have 70% hearing. NOt the same but i can emphasse with you.

You have to make the best out of the situation, trust me once you and your mrs have got your head around it, you wouldnt change him for the world.

Oh and congrats on having him, get some picies up of the little dude

This must feel so unfair to you right now, wondering why your little fella, and indeed why you and your missus? I can only echo what others have said in that millions of kids are living normal happy lives with no problems at all. For your part you will adapt and it will become the norm. A friend of mine from school was born deaf and has progressed through life really well indeed with no problems and modern hearing technology is nothing like as large and obvious as it used to be when I was a kid so is far less obtrusive.

My thought are with the three of you in this tough time. It must be harsh to have commitments so far away but im sure your wife understands and people need to realise that your hurting to. I know the mums tend to take it harder, but at least your lady has her family close, you have no-one. Well, no-one bar us PF'ers.

feel for ya mate, but as you say, the lad will grow up knowing no different.

But the technology that up and coming today is absolutely amazing and in a few year god knows what the scientist and doctors will be able to offer.

Just look at what the scientist have managed in the last 10 years, they have actally got an implant for a blind person where they can actually start to see the out line of bright colours!!
Who know what the future brings?

Real sorry to hear this mate, I'm sure once you both get used to the idea and start to adapt to it you will be fine and it wont seem so scary.

You never know, what with medical advances the way they are, he may be able to get his hearing back one day.

I don't see being deaf as a disability, I see it as an impairment, in the same way as having learning difficulties, these things can be overcome. Challenges add character. Some of the most interesting people in the world have some kind of impairment

Having a deaf child will probably open up a whole new world to you and the Mrs, a world which you never thought could have existed. Doors may open and expect only good to come from it

Hi, just wanted to say it must be a massive shock especially since you have had no contact with people who have a hearing impairment but i can unreservedly say once you and your wife are over the shock you will find that so much is help advice and fantastic tecnology is available you will understand why i have not said "sorry mate thats terrible" my father is deaf my sister is losing her hearing and due to a faulty gene it is possible my kids will be Deaf or Blind. i now work in the field of education with young babies right up to university level student and the provision now is so great that kids with a hearing impairment are not at a disadvantage. i am currently working with a boy that has a 140db loss in both ears i.e. stand him on a runway and he would not hear a plane taking off behind him and through the tecnology he has he listens to music on his i pod and this week whilst studying for his A levels in ICT and Applied Science he has took up Electric Guitar lessons. i appreciate that it must be very hard to come to terms with especially when your missus is at home and your at work but try to remain positve and keep an open mind. if you or your missus would like any info or advice i would be happy to give you my email address. just let me know. things will work out well honest.

small kids don't learn to assciate sounds and movements as they don't have very good eye/ear co-ordination so i'd refrain from making loud noises in case the little lad starts freaking out if he can't hear normal stuff

he may grow out of it so just take things as they come

hope everything goes well for the next few months until you find out for sure mate

my nan was born deaf, she got married had 5 kids AND also had a affair pmsl !!!and also one of my aunties are also deaf but i think thats my uncle being able to relate to a deaf person from hes mum, we all learned some sign though tbh all i really know now its the alphabet and some other stuff, my old man and uncles are all fucking pukka at it,,,, its quite funny seeing them talk to each other on the sly about things

its a hard time now obv but as said your child will know no different, i also grew up with a child who had tendon problems in hes hand that ment hes had open would pull hes fingers back as if hes stretched them open, but REALLy far back or he could force hes hand closed and would curve hes wrist down,,,,,, he managed to so what we all done, use to do mountain biking ect even though hes had was either open or closed,,, though he had only one brake so he was a bit accident prone !

its not nice to hear but its not the end of the world either and im sure you already know that

These are getting popular nowadays.
I doubt they are suitable for every Deaf person, and probably depends on local NHS funding.

I work with a Born Deaf 60 year old, he is "Selectively Deaf"

When it suits him, even with Top class digital hearing aids, he won't listen.

And certainly can't (won't) hear the phone at night when he is on call

as many have said it is a big shock finding something like this out

i found out a couple of weeks ago my son has a hart murmer it was a big shock & we all paniced but he is fine in himsell & we just have to see how things go & adapt to it as it happens

i never trust doctors when they say thats it & wright you off just see how things go
i got wrote off after my car crash & told i would probably never be much good for anything again
6 months later i draged my self back to work
you never know how things will turn out & worryin just makes them worse
it must be hell for you being away from them

yeah forgot to mention that my mum is also deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other ear,,,, its cause she also has selective hearing when it suits her and will ignore something and use her deafness as the reason,,,,, it seems to run in my family on both sides thinking about it,,,,, though not total deaf just not great hearing,,, its ment to be the reason why im so loud at times but ive never had my hearing tested as i dont have a hearing problem

id say give it 20 years and most deafness will beable to be sorted out and looked as a little like wearing glasses to correct hearing

thats not good newsit doesnt matter though he is still your kid and will adapt to it i have a son and daughter my son son to wear glasses as his left is is week short vision we were wondering why he was bumping into stuff?then my freind showed me a pic of me and my son and pointed out his eyewe went to the optition and my mate was rightmy son's eye is getting better but now his hearing is not the best aswellthink he has an infection in his ears waiting on the doc getting back to usi was devistated when i heard about his eyes but no things are getting betterhope you get better news as its terrible to hear things happening to kids

hopefully it's all good news for you mate i had bad hearing when i was a young child and had to have grommets, it sorted it out and my hearing has been really good ever since, now i choose to destroy it with loud night clubs and my car stereo lol.

serious note though my thoughts are with you, i can't start to imagine the worry your going through, try and keep your chin up, like has been said the medical world these days is unbelievable compared to the past.

just had to say m8 i,m a builder working on a big hall for the deaf a coulpe of weeks back and i did,ent find it hard to talk to them at all they lip read me and comunicated back no problem at all,,i dont think it,s a worst case senario at all... maybe upsetting 4 u as parents but i,m betting he will get more love trust me when u see him runing around like a loony love will concoure i seen sum sad case,s in hostipal with kids m8 when my boy was in and out i,m so gratefull

Cutch - My sisters little girl was born exactly the same mate, she was virtually tone deaf in both ears. At 13 months my sister decided to get her fitted with a Cochleah implant, took a while for little Hollie to get used to it but now she's 4 years old she can hear very well and she's no different to any other kid. So much so she is actually going in for her other ear next week!! Operation is painless and she has to wear a small thing behind her ear, but her hair covers it. Learning wise she is very intelligent, the only thing that is slightly noticeable is her speech is a little behind but the nurses have said that she will catch up soon enough. She's even going to a 'normal' primary school in september.

If you want any more details mate or any contacts then I can get the details for you. The place the does the ops are in Nottingham (all under NHS) and they really look after them.

Yeah that would be great, Cheryls already said that if he can get it he's getting the implant, I think she wants it to be as normal as possible for him, you know what kids are like bullying etc, as far as i know they are the best hearing aid you get???? But i dont know squat about it.....I am thinking its probably a good idea to talk to the docs first before i start pestering you for info! They might turn round and say that the implant etc isnt a possiblity
