As you read this the brand new episode of Top Gear is being honed and polished at a secret location in the heart of swinging London. Unless of course you’re reading this at 1am on Sunday, in which case everyone will have gone home.
Anyway, far be it from Top Gear to blow heartily into its own trumpet but this Sunday’s show is basically going to be the best thing that’s ever been on television ever. Probably. It’s certainly quite good.
TV’s Richard Hammond described turning up to the studio on Wednesday as ‘being back at school’ and, short of drawing a rude picture of a gentleman’s underpart on someone else’s exercise book, that’s exactly what it was like.
But despite this new term giddiness and an absence of six months, everyone hit the ground running. Even James managed to turn up on time, having decided to fly down in his small washing machine with wings. He very thoughtfully gave Hammond a lift too.
So the studio recording went well, and the VT bits in between are pretty special too, most notably the main item which features one of Top Gear’s most epic and visually stunning races to date. Miss it, and have to spend Monday morning wondering what on earth all your workmates are talking about.
Thank Christ

Will Stiggy be revealed?
JC: Stig to remove helmetPosted by The Mole at 10:23 am on Saturday June 20, 2009
The Mole’s not usually one for open self-congratulation, but since claiming yesterday on this very blog that tomorrow night’s telly show is ‘going to be the best thing that’s ever been on television ever‘, Jeremy has spilled a bean or two about the programme that makes me, well, right.
Clarkson has revealed in his Sun newspaper column today that Stig finally shows the world his face.
He said ‘the Stig barges into the studio and in an atmosphere you could cut with a knife, removes his helmet’.
‘As a television moment, it’s up there with Neil Armstrong walking on… the corpse of JR Ewing.’
So, if you needed any more persuasion to tune in at 8pm tomorrow night on BBC 2, this is it.
Want to see what happened in the studio at the telly recording for this week’s show? Take a look at our backstage gallery…
TopGear.com will have exclusive behind the scenes video from this week’s show – stuff you won’t be able to watch anywhere else – live straight after the programme on Sunday night. And then even more exclusive outtakes and extras on Monday and Tuesday next week. Log on as the credits roll at 9pm for more…
