Couple of old pics from when I started out driving, stopped off at mates and family's houses to nick their showers and get free food as I was out all week:

why do both have trade plates in window?

never been a fan of the premiums interior has always felt cheap, not as cheap as iveco though.

For the reason mentioned above

I had to use one as I drove 2 or 3 different trucks every day for 7 months. Insuring each one individually might have been a tad tricky

Agreed on the Premium interiors, but I always thought they were nice looking tractor units externally.

I drove this one for 2 days, and got a lot of compliments off other drivers when they saw it - all it was was a tarted up old truck like the white one above - retrimmed interior, light bars, metallic paint and loads of gopping walnut trim everywhere. Certainly looks smart though:

They also had a weird gearbox - I think called a "knock through" or something - to select high range after going through 1,2,3,4 - you put it in neutral, slammed the lever hard to the left till you heard / felt a clunk, then put it back into 1, 2,3,4 which had now become 5 6 7 8 - always worried about buzzing the engine if you didn't get the knock through bit right!

Worst and at time best gearbox I used was an Eaton Twin splitter - 12 speed on my company's old DAF. No clutch needed, was hard to get everything perfectly matched revs and gearbox speed wise.

Liked the Comfort shift option on the high end MANs, and Merc Actros Telligent shifters were cool too.

The geaarbox you are talking about is the same as the early MAN and iveco's. Rubbish really.

those knock though boxes are on iveco eurostars etc too. ive never liked the boxes in renaults however the blue 1 above is pretty smart,

best gearbox imo is the volvo i-shift box, manual box with electronic lid. excelent as long as you dnt leave it in drive when parked up with an air leak.

the eaton twin splitter is a good box if you no how to drive it, ever watched the "how to drive a eaton ts box" video? the american guy plays a few tunes with it haha

EaTON Range change ... Must have disabled the final 4 splits ... Older EaTONS you had to adjust the clutch throw often and make sure the clutch break is fully engaging. Or they would crunch

I remember one time (Not at band camp) A 3406 CAT powered 4400 Foden 6x4 tractor sheared the Bell housing bolts because of an Amature driver ..

Early Foden's had full PeterBuilt gear on them ... All the spring hangers etc ... Rockwell or EaTON axles and Either Fuller's or Range changers.

Looks nicely accessorised as well
I have no idea what he's driving now as he's not been long in the new job
he's had a few easy runs (as he says) and think he's going on the continent again next week

Not much chance of me driving HGV's in the near future but I would like to get the license's. I wanted to get my class 2 with keyline/travis perkins and stick with a business I know to get into it but it wasnt gonna happen. See what happens in the future though

Awesome stuff - Love my Scanias

Anyone know the rules about removing/permanantly locking out the 5th wheel and reclassifying the vehicle as a PLG? I quite fancy a man sized project next year

I know you used to be able to lock off the 5th wheel with a trailor pin/bar and drive the tractor unit on a car licence, but did all that change after the licence system was updated in 1997/8ish?

T164 680 .. Pretty nice rig .. Probably had full ISIR leather and Double glazing .. Thats the top line for scania ... Still beat by Volvo F16 700hp .. Currently the most powerful production truck on earth .. Although the Yanks wont admit it

not 100% sure but think you have to have your class2 just to drive a artic unit with no fifth wheel.

Still need a class 2
You used to be able to drive a unit as long as the bed was disabled or removed on a class 2 but you don,t need to disable it now

Yes and the wierd thing is. All that money in that truck with only delivering flowers You should see the houses and normal cars they have.

Today i washed my new truckie. FH13 440 Euro 5. Put some new curtains in and cleaned it a bit. Still need to do the trailer but it was freakin warm today.
