has there ever been a car that ran an opposed piston engine?
as above, a bloke at work work talking about them today and they sounded like quite a clever idea, to me

an apposed piston engine doesnt have a cylinder head, just a a block with a crank at both ends, fuel, air and ignition is entered in the middle as the two pistons come towards each other, if that makes sense?

could be a 2 stroke quite easily then with no valves
, but I would imagine the stroke would have to be very short or the compression ratios would be mad!

at first i thought he was on about steam engines, they work like that, one piston but 2 ends when they thought of the design to make use of the extra steam
but this looks like something totaly different

Still ultimately limited by PCP and the quality of fuel being used etc.... the normal rules would still apply.

Hi all,
Some 1960's Commer truck's used a 3 cylinder opposed piston 2 stroke supercharged diesel, that had a single crankshaft at 90 degree's to the cylinder's and below them, the piston's had conrod's connected to rocker arm's that had another set of conrod's connecting to the crankshaft !
This engine was known as a "Commer screamer" as it had a great sound.
Other than a rotary engine this was the last "unusual" type of engine on our road's.
The Deltic engine was made by Napier.
