Default key problem mk6 escort

hi i hope somone can help i have a 1996 escort si and the key has started to become worn and sometimes takes ages to unlock and start the car my question is do i have to replace the ecu if i replace the locks ?

Mrs had the same problem on her mk3 fiesta, the key gets worn out so it doesnt operate the lock any more.

It was only a shitter so I didn't bother having an expensive chip key re-coded or anything, so I just got a cheap key cut, cut the old metal shaft bit off the old key, and glued the transponder bit to the new key, worked a treat!
