iPhone 3GS - thinking of getting one...
my 2G has been awesome, not had to think about upgrading but my contract is up for renewal next week so might get one of these as the keynote looks good, also the features.......
Ive been told to hang on as the o2 exclusivety will end soon and will be open to all networks
Any thoughts people?

No, it's the same... Just the internals are different.
Been Reading up on o2 and if you spend over £40 a month they reduce the upgrade time! Ranging from 1 month earlier to a whopping 6 months earlier. To get it 6 months before your contract is due an upgrade, you need to have spent £80+ a month. Still good tho!
I'm tempted by it, but my MINT 3G is only 4 months into it's 18 month contract.... Damn! Could always sell it and buy a PAYG 3GS I suppose....

I quite often swap hi resolution photos taken on my phone with other people and also transfer them to my computer using bluetooth.
Also, beleive it or not you can also swap music mp3 files too
If any of that makes me a child as you have implied then thanks for the advice dad
Shame Apple have concentrated more on looks than functionality

Why email when you are stood next to the person with a bluetooth phone
If you think Bluetooth is just for kids then thats your choice but I personally find it very useful !
Hate my Iphone, I still have to keep my N95 with me to make up for its shitness and all the things it cant do

Yer I find bluetooth very useful, parrot car kit etc, which it works good for ..
Doesnt the 3.0 software help you out in any way? I havent looked into it, but is it improved in 3.0 to let you do this?
Simple answer
In your car, carry a 240v > 12vdc inverter.
Carry a router, and as long as the phone u want to connect to has wifi and runs an equivalent of winscp, you're laughing
Ahem ..

No matter what is said about what the iphone lacks.... in all fairness, it doesnt! I have been doing phone-to-phone transfer via bluetooth for ages, so yes, iphone can do that.
Ok, so Apple are tight tw@ts and keep these features hidden away, but thats where the other Devs come into it and allow you to access what Apple want you to not know about.
Video recording, MMS sending, Multiple image emailing, grouping, group texting/emailing, bluetoothing........ man, the list is endless - Its all been possible on the 3G and is still on the 3GS.
Compare say a N95/N96 to an iphone and what advantages are there to one and not the other.... A high resolution camera on the N Series (granted), but still its not a 'true' 5MP cam ... The N Series allows for flash.... Thats all i can think of actually. Oh, and it allows mp3 playback as mp3's.
iphone: highest tech in touch screen, fastest flowing motion with that screen. It can do almost f*cking anything you want it too with its billions of apps available.... I mean can your N Series phone warn you when ya missus is due on or tell you the BHP of the car you are in? Can it lead you to the nearest hole in the wall or restaurant when you are lost in the middle of no-where? Com'on! It has upto twice the amount of onboard memory than the N Series could only dream about. Its sleek, its smooth styled, oh and its not the size of half a house brick!
End of the day, i have owned both iphone and N Series. I was going to upgrade my N95 to an N96, but thought i'd take the gamble on the iphone - and I'm so glad I did! I aint no phone geek, programmer geek or any of that, but i know a good thing when i see it.
My 2 cents worth sorry

Torrent download yea? Im gonna wait 5 days... could get updated again in that time, ya never know. Plus i want a fresh, trustable JB for it too.
Just been reading up on itunes 8.2... apparently if jailbroke phones try syncing with the new updated itunes, it knackers it? What itunes did you just use OldDan?

Phone was only restored this morning, back to boggo standard.
Just did a shift-restore with a file from a torrent site, and bingo it's on and running
Used iTunes 8.2.0.23

Im temtped to do that, but still think i'll wait till the 17th... probably the only legit official thing i'll do to it tho
Kinda lost without JBing it... Installous all the way! Especially with this new TOMTOM costing over £50 just for the app alone! (speculation).
But atleast it looks ok to use 8.2 then

i dont get why people wanna upgrade to this,
i'm STILL using a 2g one, its been jailbroken and imo there is no need to upgrade,
ok so i cnt use 3g internet but i can still use the edge, and tbh 3g coverage in most areas is rubbish.
mines spot on, and uless i break it big time i shall not be upgrading

I'm running OS3 on a 2G and see no real reason to upgrade.
The iPhone is the best phone out on the market and any other manufacturer is simply playing catchup to them. The iPhone OS is far superior to any other phone operating system - even the pre OS which is a direct rip.
People moan that it costs more money to buy Apple. Yes, it does. But you also get a good 3-4 years use out of an Apple product. They very rarely leave older hardware out of any updates... Something that cannot be said for generic PC based computers and other mobile phone manufacturers. You pay more initially, but overall you probably break even on costs.
People that say they are in 'IT' and trash Apple are very blinkered.

I chose that one thing to quote, as you said can it do that. And it can.
I have an N95 8gb, and an Iphone 3g (work and personal) and it suits me to have both. They both have their merits and faults.
I've also had pretty much every top end phone thats been about, and if I had to choose one phone, I'd always go for the N95 8gb out of everything.

They doubled up the ram and also created a 32GB version, and a compass thing. Admittedly yes, it's the same phone externally, but the insides have been changed alot.
I like the tap-to-focus feature, but doubt that's worth £400!!!
I'll list those requested apps in a bit

Cycorder & abgrouper from cydia. Type mms into iTunes and the red one is the best. Also get Installous installed - it holds loads of cracked apps.
I'm saying these on jailbreak iPhones.
Googles a great friend for all this info

That's what I'm gonna do, I think. hopefully the Devs have been hard at work updating apps for the 3.0 and that the jailbreak still works. Apparently JB is ready, but they ain't releasing until apple have released 3.0. Apple could adjust anything from now till the 17th!
