Pulsar GTiR

I nearly bought a uk sunny gtir for our company demo car but kept with the blue oval instead. Good cars with a few flaws such as weak transfer boxes, gearboxes. Also they dont have forged pistons, they are cast which means there are issues if you want to raise the boost. Prone to rust as well, but they are very cheap to buy so you do get a lot of car for your money.
Hope this helps mate

I used to have a black one, was FANTASTIC!! Pretty much bullet proof too, apart from as said above, the transfer box!
A friend of mine had a MS Esc Cos at the same time, and it GENUINELY walked away from it!

My mate bought one not so long ago. They are not all that std but his has full exhaust system, decat, filter and upped boost and goes pretty well. His is the the rare Dakar version and has proper full roll cage and few other trick bits.
He has just had it fully resprayed with new archs and its looking mint now. He has just bought an expensive boat so is going to be selling up before he even gets to use it which is a shame. Would have been cool to cruise about with him in the GTIR and me in my WRX

The SR20DET should be pretty tough I'd have thought, but I've heard since forever how weak the gearboxes are. The seem to rust more than most Jap cars too from what I've seen.
Some interesting thoughts as a lot of people appear to be running 1.2 bar on standard engines...

Mine was mint no problems what so ever 1.2 bar all day long and dicks all over an ESCOS off the line to a ton or just over even when stage 3. Bargains now I want another but too tempting to mess with!

Used to have an old grp.A rallycar, was very very quick off the line and through the gears
Held 1.9 bar boost on a heavily modified engine, 100 MPH came up quicker than almost anyhting else on the road.
The gearbox and diffs shat themselves several times when it was with the previous owner (a mate at the time) and only once when I had it...coming round a corner on cut slicks, mashing the throttle midcorner.
Awesome little car!

Std engine - 1 bar of boost - properly setup = 300bhp.
Lot of punch for not a lot of money!!
After that it gets tricky... i've been involved with 600bhp ones and they're a NIGHTMARE at that power level!

I'm just after something small, light, fast, nimble, good handling and relatively cheap that I can use to get into a bit of sprinting and such like here and there. I was thinking that 300bhp in one of these would be PLENTY. And if it's easily and cheaply achievable then it sounds like a winner!

My mates home built 387bhp Pulsar GTiR, had to rebuild the engine as it melted a standard piston @ 1.2bar.
Arias pistons
Eagle rods
Cometic multilayer head gasket
gt30 turbo running 1.4 bar
ebay front mount intercooler and hardpipe kit
mocal oil cooler
Evo 6 injectors
standard ecu with daughterboard, mapped by Matt at The Racing Line
2.5" turbo back stainless exhaust
Wilwood 4 pot brakes
17" Superleggera's
RPS Streetmax clutch
Rebuilt gearbox with shot peened internals
Front mount intercooler just fitted
Evo 6 front seats, mounted to modified Nissan seat runners
At Knockhill trackday

forgot to say, check out www.gtiroc.com
Or www.nissangtir.co.uk
I have had 4 Gti-r's, also had Evo's and Scobbies, I always come back to the Gti-r.
Cheap and if looked after well, is fun.
Here is my current project.

A friend of mine had one 4/5yrs or so ago. It had Exhaust, filter, d/v and boost upgrade to around 1bar. Was rapid off the mark to 100mph ish and he ran it for a year like that with no problems at all.

tommi mak drove them in the wrc and dai lewellyn who was british rally champ,a few other well known scandinavians drove them but for me the sunny shone (fuckin great pun that ) in rallycross. tony bardy did rallycross and stage rally them, his is ex works nme and he prepares nissans and other top end motorsport stuff

Tony Bardys car is awesome.
My mate had a very tidy standard pulsar. Only problem was the clutch pedal bracket snapped (common fault), one Ł10 bracket from the owners club, and all good.

I had one of these, best car ive ever had. , if i could buy back my GTiR as it was when i sold it i would. Only lost one race and that was against a noble. I had a hiteq forged engine 370bhp and it felt so much faster than my 420bhp escort cos i had. Clutches where a problem for me i had 4 in 4 years ownership. Im seriously looking for another good one again. nothing that sells for sensible money could beat one to 100mph.

As far as I know, uk cars came with oil coolers on the diff's + gearboxes. the imported cars didnt have these, so when they are de-restricted + breathed on, it doesnt like it!
Not speaking from experience here, a mechanic mate of mine was telling me last year when I had the chance to buy an import.
Years ago, my m8's sisters fella had a 400bhp 1....it went like stink and as far as I can remember, never gave him any grief...cant remember the spec though
