i wouldnt start it unless its had a new cambelt, but IF it looks OK and not brittle or about to snap etc, then you need to get some oil pressue up first, so make sure it can not get no spark and turn the motor over until its built up some oil pressure and circulated the oil

Guessing it will be mineral oil in an engine that old, and after 5 years of standing doing nothing will of possibly turned to a jellyfied substance - change oil oil and filter is first and foremost before any attempt at starting is to be had

As above - if its a cambelt then inspect its conditio. Oil and filter change - then take the king lead off the distributor and turn it over until the oil presure light goes out!

had a looky at the mk1 fez today, freed off the rear brakes, pumped up a couple of tyres and pulled the plugs, put it in gear and gave her a push and the engine turns over so thats a good start. next up is to get a battery and give the engine a bit of a service before trying to start her. she seems pretty solid with a bit of rust around the front valance by the bumper mounts. inner wings seem ok but a bit soft. anyway hers a few pics..

happy days

i'd agree, just to get it running at least. if its knackered then you havent wasted 20 quid on oil. take the plugs out, then crank the engine for 30 seconds or so to get some oil round it. put some fresh fuel in it though to give it a help and see what happens.
