oval racing isn't cheap and would be well out of your budget. The new merc national hot rod costing 45k to get on the track!

Try a couple of years in a one make series like Caterhams, minis, max5, PBMW, Golf GTI. In all cases the rules are controlled to try and keep costs under control and the racing close. Will teach you lots about racecraft and give you valuable experience for moving on to something faster and more expensive in the future.

I did 3 seasons in PBMW and then have spent 2 racing a 3 door in the Classic Touring Car Racing Club Pre-93 Championship. The bills are 2-3 times higher now that I am running the Sierra which is much quicker.

There are other series such as TTRS, Combe Saloons and DMN which are focused on saloon cars of various levels of modifications.

alot of it depends of what type of motorsport your into, there are many differant types, from circuit to hillclimb and inbetween, personally i hate tracks, i have no interest at all in driving round a race circuit. but give me a broken surface, or a forest/gravel stage and thats me sorted.

there is one more type that i dont think could be any worse, driving round in the same direction for 10 mins or even more - how insane !

I would recommend trying a few days out on test days on the cheap before you commit to a vehicle in a discipline you dont like !

thats a big enough budget to go tarmac stage rallying and buy a decent car. mega fun and competetive, but expensive! just find a navigator some decent service mechanics and pick a championship to enter!

Caterham Academy sounds good for you, includes hill climb, sprints and a few races. All with other novice competition drivers to keep the playing field more even.

I compete in rallying, racing and sprinting.

In a nut shell...

Sprinting - you have to go out of your way or be very unlucky to have any sort of accident. Can you anything from a standard road car to an F1 car. Cheap to get into as well when compared to racing / rallying.

Rallying - you 're responsible for your own accidents.

Racing - you're not always responsible for accidents as you you can get hit by others.

As with any motorsport the greater the budget the more chance you have of winning / being competitive.
