here you go bad lad ! take the front of the lamp post off and there should be a fuse unit with a live and neutral in the bottom , thats the feed , pull the fuse unit out ( it will now be dead at the top (not the bottom )and connect your cables in at the top with the existing cables and dont forget the earth . when you refit the fuse unit it will now be live at all times (top and bottom)as the cables at the top feed the dusk till dawn sensor then to the light so its switching through the sensor . just to make sure take a multimeter with you for your own safety.
p.s the information given is believed to be true but iam not being held responable or liable for prosecution , death or electric shocks
many thanks paul

worked on street lighting for a few years could be live all the time but sometimes you find that 1 light turns the rest on if its live all the time there will be a sensor on the top of the light looks like a nipple.also take into consideration that although it may only be 240 volts it aint gonna just be 13 amps like your house prob more like 100 and remember a pair of marigolds aint gonna stop you gettin a shock and its amps that kill not volts.but if you decide to go ahead then as said above take fuse out and put your wires in top remember and connect the neutral(plain copper wires that run round the outside of live and earth)best of luck please dont kill yourself and if you do im not responsible ps if you pm me il get you a diagram

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that you would get the square root of about fuck all power from a single lamp post, and would have to tap into about 7 of them to get a 'useable' amount of power. Its just not worth it mate

I have let a neighbour use power from my house to power his 2 garages out of the back door.
In return, he gave me a 6mx3m garage worth Ł1000 for free and pays the council the rent money for the garage plot too which is worth Ł100 per year

take a bulb out of your house and stick your finger in the socket. can you feel the power ?

The more safer option really would be to contact the people in the houses nearby, see if you can come to an agreement to wire your garage off their house, stick in a seperate meter or even a coin meter!

Why not tax a few drain covers and weigh them in as scrap to save up for the rapidily impending fine
This has to be the worst plan I've EVER heard. And that includes my mate that wanted me to be his getaway driver when he planned to steal and then ransom back a few penguins from dudley zoo.

there used to be a lamp post near me thats cover was hanging off, had a peek inside and was surprised to find a standard 4-gang extension block with a standard plug on it running to the top!
Might be as simple as just plugging your kettle in!

There was a guy who worked for S&T on the railway, he was renting a flat above a railway station. He decided to tap the railway signal and use that to run power to his flat. It worked well untill there were some problems in that area and the guy who responded to it saw the cable running from the signal to his window and............ you can guess the rest......

I'm currently a street lighting engineer for the local authority in Hertfordshire.
Most lighting columns are swithced through the use of a photocell on the lantern body which turns the light on when the lighting levels drop to 70lux (iirc). Some however are what we term as group switched and there will be a 5m or so high column with the photocell on that. The whole circuit remains dead until the photocell switches everything on.
Street lights are 240v and fed either from a private network (authority owned) or connected straight to electricity boards cable.
If you pinch power from the electricity company they will come after you and so will your local authority.
Not worth it imho and you may put any maintenace engineer at risk by tapering with the cutout.
