Default House utilities

As some of you may or may not know, i will be moving soon, as i currently house share, the house bills arent my responsibility, but in my new pad it will be just me again!! YAY!

Anyway, the main things i am interested in are house insurance, who are you guys with and how much to do you pay for what cover?

and

Telephone/broadband/sky - what is the best package?

home ins with the AA buildings and contents on a semi detached 3 bed room house,£60,000 cover on the contents with accidental damage, new for old, everything in my deed boundrys, with shed contents cover plus loads of other stuff £26.00 per month.

Telephone/broadband is with Virgin (or NTL as they were known) and have got a lot better at what the do nowadays.
Phoneline+10mg broardband cost about £27.00 for both inc line rentals and a small phone bill, which really dont count cos we all got mobiles.

i personaly wouldnt use sky for phone or broardband as my mate has BB and its a real pain in the ass, many complications after 6 months with ONLY a 62kb download speed.

Sky basic package £20something a month.

Yes you do, which normally is quite expensive to have a line installed but we did have someone knock on the door when iwas out who said we could have the line put in for £25 odd, their very much similar tbh depends what u prefer really, the only major difference really is virgin being fibre optic their broadband is technically better but i know loads of ppl on BT too with no probs so!

If you are not into sports have a look at Btvision. I have the complete bb/phone/tv package and its £37 a month. not good for sports but the mrs/kids love it,whole series of soaps/dramas/kids stuff that you can watch one after the other! Bt did me a deal(new house so no bt line valid) and charged £25 instead of £125 for connection, free btvision box,hub and 2 phones.

regards mark

We've got Sky with no problems to date, but you've got to pay £10 a month for the BT line rental. If I was you I'd go for Virgin Media.

If you've an Orange contract phone, then you can get wireless broadband for £5 a month. My mobile is only £20 so £25 for both ain't bad. And the BT normal £11pm of course.

Freeview is best. How much do you need to flick through and say "that's crap" "that's crap" ? lol

My House & Contents is with Sheilas wheels of all places.. Just go through http://www.moneysupermarket.com/home/ and see which best suits for your needs.

This isn't any use to you Maria but could be useful for somebody else and it's fairly relevant. BT are actually offering FREE BT LINE INSTALLATION at the moment until 30th June 2009.

More info here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/dea...e-installation

I see your a cynic like me!! Ive had to go down to TPFT on my car as fully comp is useless to me as noone will do agreed value so by the time ive paid £600 excess plus remaining balance on annual premium, chances are id be worse off than not claiming at all, even for a total loss!! Shocking really. The only company that qouted me agreed value is over twice the premium and i cant afford it!!

Maria try via your bank. You might get a good deal from them. I got combined house/buildings and contents for £56 a month. of that £12 a month is the "ultimate reward" account charge which got me a bigger discount as well as the combined both product discount and free AA roadside assistance.

There are some good deals out there, more so for combined packages than just contents, but like most things shop round.

its worth it for the menu searching as the current channel becomes smaller in the corner so you can still watch it, none of that hold music and blue screen you get with sky

one of my "bad" insurance experiences was a fe years ago when a pipe burst in the loft, ruining the cealings of both floors below

we stopped the leak, got it patched up, called the insurance guy

they came bak with a thing to get 2 quotes for the work to fix stuff

both around the £6k mark, cealings, walls, carpet, computer, contents, etc

then the insruance company said that "due to you not alerting us at the time you found out, and therefore, we were unable to send out an approved repairer for the burst pipe, we will not be paying out"

needless to say, i'm banned from that branch of abbey national

so watch out for the really teeny tiny small print

I thought that.....but we had a really bad leak in November when we were out for the day.......our lounge was ruined. I fought and fought the insurance company but last friday I got a cheque which covered everything.

All damaged furniture replaced
All new Carpets
Decorated to MY specification with MY chosen workmen with MY chosen materials with all walls being taken back to brick and replastered, and a new ceiling
Electrics sorted and new sockets/swithces/lights to MY spec
New doors, skirting, door frames etc

And enough to cover other sundry stuff we accrued like phone calls to sort out the quotes and additional power used drying the house out.

Got what I asked for down to the penny ( admittedly it was a pain and I had to keep refusing their offers, but in the end I demanded a loss adjuster to be involved and it was resolved very quickly after that )

Without a decent policy it would have ruined our lives as I couldnt have found the £20k needed repair the house.

Well worth spending some time over

I think our policy was about £250 a year building and contents and we have a few named items on there too like engagement ring, my bikes etc which are all covered off premises.

Take your time looking at policies Maria
