Its a file that has been on system for ages, all other files open except this, it says file may be read only. i am trying to reach a read only location or the sever the document is stored may not be responding. Windows 2000, office 2000,

Its my stock sheet so a killer and not backed up anywhere else.

Tried to add into an email but when clicking send comes up there was an error

Some things to check: Right-click the file and see if the attributes say "read only" Open Task Manager (right-click status bar at bottom of screen) and check Excel is not already running. Check temp folders in case a copy of the file has been saved there. If so rename it.

This is on XP btw. Could be in C:\ Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Microsoft or C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Temp

right.... Right click on icon and check attributes archive is ticked, nothing else.
Checked excel etc isnt running in task manager and also rebooted
Cleared temp files to recycle bin

Then rebooted and..........................

Stock, xls cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location, Or,the sever the document is stored on may not be responding

Did a full stock take at year end too lol, is it a start all over again case then or can anyone still help open this fooking file!!

Cheers for all the help thus far

In theory copying the xls file and then deleting the old one should work, tho you might have to run chkdsk again.

After that... you might have to concede it's corrupt and start again
