Default I think my engine is sick - problem found

Went for a setup on Wednesday and 15 miles into the drive home and it started to tap, i was traveling at around 60-70 mph then it seemed to clear then it fired on 3 and when i eventually pulled over to the left lane it died and i coasted to a stop.

The car was running spot on so to go all of a sudden like this was strange.

I tried to start it again but it was difficult, when it did start it fired on 2 or 3 so i turned it off, their was also a slight rattle/tapping noise.

No it's home i charged the battery back up

With some inspection at home their doesn't seem to be oil leaking from anywhere or a mixture in the header. The oil on the dipstick seems clear and an inspection inside the rocker looked fine.
I removed the plugs and 1 and 4 were very black were the other two weren't as bad - theirs a spark on all four plugs and the leads are fine.

One thing i did notice is that number 1 and 4 the square clip that fits over the injector tops/rail was seating correctly especially number 4 (bulkhead end) it was on an angle, these were remove in the service to enhance spray, they have since been refitted correctly could this have caused any issues as nothing was picked up on the service??

Tried to start it this morning and i get this very load popping noise when i turn the key like pressure from somewhere but i can't identify were from, it has just had a dump valve fitted.

The car does try to start if you pump the pedal like mad but again sounds as if it's trying to fire 2 or 3.

Does it sound like it's fucked?? before i take the top end off for inspection.

line up the timing mark at the crank, then check the dizzy/oil pump pulley and cam pulleys and see if theyre all lined up

check your bottom pulley to make sure allthe timing lugs are there, one of mine flew off while driving and it took me ages to suss it out.

I know mine is a CVH, but when I had the same symptoms, It was a big end bearing that had gone because the oil gallery in the rod had blocked up

I'll try the above later when i get out of bed, what worries me is the loud compressed pop that comes from somewhere and the really strong smell of fuel.

Have you got vernier pulleys?
I had ally piper verniers on my sapphire, and they fuckers slipped when I was on my way to work one morning and snapped the heads clean off 2 inlet valves and hammered them into the pistons

Started as a tapping and popping out of the exhausy, then got REALLY loud.

I would think the compressed pop and smell of fuel would be unburnt fuel in the exhaust manifold igniting maybe, as Ern has said check your lugs on the crank pulley and if you have verniers check that they havent slipped.

Sounds electrical rather than mechanical? Check phase sensor/crank sensor/crank pulley.

Could be injector related? dependant on what was done to them in the service.

My mates RS turbo had injector problems and when it was setup the fuel pressure was adjusted to overcome the issue. After a few miles the injectors cleared and as a result it flooded

Where the spark plugs changed as part of the service. Check they are all in securely.

my erst does this and its running cossie management, the loud pop is cause youve been turning it over and its pumping fuel in and then when you turn the ignition on and off the ecu, sparks all four injectors and thats what pops!!

also mine doesnt run and is doing exactly the same as yours so i dont think its anything to worry about as mines got an electrical fault, its usually the crank or phase sensor, deffo check you bottom ring though as i knocked mine out of place alittle and it wouldnt run.

Wish i was mate on 11 hr night shifts.

Right the car won't start even will a full charge on the battery, it fires in a fashion on say 3 if you pump the pedal like mad but then dies. the tapping noise was from the top of the engine and it did sound sound slightly more than your average sticky tappet

I have checked the positioning of things - all pictures are the engine at the same position

cam pully's - triangles facing each other

phase sensor

bottom pully - the little notch isn't in line with the crank sensor is that right?? it's about 5mm to the side of it

I dont think so mate, looks like he's turned just past tdc, that along with the camera angle makes it look off.

Are the plugs wet with fuel when the engine is turning over. Can you get hold of some more injectors and use these to iliminate the injectors.

when my map sensor failed was just like running on 3 to start with. but once stopped and tryed to restart from cold had to pump throttle as fast as possible and it would just start pumping out black smoke. just as you said yours did.

i dont know what the noise is you heard, but seems identical symptoms to my map sensor failer.

The company i dealt with are a well known company and have tried to help as much as they can over the phone it should have gone back to them but the AA pissed around and they would have been well shut by the time the recovery came.

I would try the map sensor but it's brand new and i haven't got another to try, and at the moment buying an item that may not be the problem isn't really an option as i'm skint after the service

Problem confirmed - the exhaust cam is snapped in half

People who have had this problem - did you have to take the head off for further inspection or just replace the cam???

This is the position of the cams when top pully's meet - the rear of the exhaust is the part that isn't turning, obviously

Anyone have a Std or BD10 cam for sale in mint condition???

it's worth trying to fit another cam first to see how it runs. as long as the cam snapped in the position with the valves closed (the part that does'nt turn) it should be ok.
