How Much Does Paint Cost? Metallic Car Paint...
My Brother is fixing a car for my Dad, he's fixed it all, and it's great. However, when it came to paint it, my Brother has said he is having the car painted, and he needs 250 Pound for the paint. Not the labour, just the paint. It's a metallic Ford Colour, and it's had a full side. So I suspect it needs blending in. A friend of my Dads said, 50 Pound is all the paint will cost, and my Brother said it's 250. Anyone? They've argued all week, and I said I'd have it settled. This is not labour charges, just the materials.

All varies on what make u get as to price, last time i bought some spies hecker solvent basecoat it was about 40odd a litre where as waterbased was about £80.
Lacquer u can get as cheap as £50 for 5L!! but then spies hecker for eg is about £200 a litre!! Plus then u got the cost of the basecoat thinner and thinner for lacquer (normally gets thinned down 10%)
THink it cost me about £200 odd to do a full respray on my old xr2i........

Depending what paints used mate yea could cost that much, but obviously can be done with cheaper paints etc. It could be done for alot less that that tbh.......
Like is say i did a whole xr2i for 200odd, 3L of basecoat and bought 5L of lacquer.
Obviously lacquer can be bought in smaller tins etc, is he painting it himself or taking it to a garage to do?!

benni if your doing a insurance job you want the most expensive paint and all new materials. if its a decent job with some older materials and newspaper instead of proper masking paper and cheeper paint you can do it for about 60 quid if your doing it yourself.
i have a mate who buys cars needing paint in colours he already has the paint for thus its a very cheep job with just a bit of masking tape/paper/bog (filler)/primer/basecoat and laquer

It's my Dad's own car, which has had a full new side. Wing, Qauter, Door etc. My Brother repaired it for free, but he isn't a sprayer, and his friend is spraying it for the cost of the materials, and my Brother is fixing the sprayers car. However, Dad's friends have interviened? And said paint doesn't cost that much and now my Dad won't pay the 250, as his friend said it will be no more than 50.

Cant the sprayer get the paint for him?! most places get a bit of a discount, plus if he's got access to lacquer he might be able to use that instead.........
Doesnt need to cost that much thou mate can be done cheaper, but it CAN easily cost that much depending what brand of paint u get etc and the painter might be using a more expensive lacquer!

ahh benni its the old i'll do it for the materials chestnut.
call it 250 quid for mates rates and stuff a 200 quid dropsie in me arse pocket, they won't know and i don't care routine.
a cash price in a bodyshop for a good customer for painting a full side would be cheep at 250 quid though imo matey.

as above, if he's getting it himself he's probably will be making a bit ontop for it, which is how a painter makes his money
Last time i checked you were lookin at about £100-150 a panel
Tbh if u go sourcing the paint yourself you might find him getting funny about it, some paints do go on differently and he may want to use one he's used too to minimise any problems.
But if he's happy for you to source the paint you can get it cheaper than that mate!

a litre would be enough for a side of a car wouldnt it? by the time its thinned 50/50? but thats just the colour. then youve got the primers and laquers and thinners and sandpapers, masking tape etc etc.

these days a rough price for a litre of metallic base would be around £40+vat per litre, thats what i paid not so long ago for my mallard green anyways
then theres the lacquer, which as said above can vary dramatically depending on the branding, but luckily my painter is happiest working with a relatively cheap brand so cost me about 70quid for 5 litres.
then a high quality thinners could set you back about £30 for 5 litres
of course its all dependant on how much is actually needed, id guess for a single side of the car, a litre of base would be plenty, as thats 2 litres when thinned. then of course you wouldnt need a full 5 litres of lacquer or thinners, so could buy these in litre tins instead to reduce the cost
id hazzard a rough guess, and i emphasise the rough bit, that actual materials used would be around £100

My mate JUST painted my 5 series in base coat and lacquer. In Imola red.
He painted bonnet and front wing, blended in to door and painted rear wing on same side and again blended in. I did a welding job for him (6 hours welding prob) so he said just give us the cost of paint and we are square (a nice bloke!)
He said give us £50 and that will cover it, He painted bonnet twice (something about run-out thinners?) and he made a top job and i'm fussy
