Default Buying on a private plate ?

I’ve found a car I want to buy but its on a private plate
The owner wants to retain the plate, so how long does it normally take before the dvla assign the old plate back
Or give it a new number?
How do you go about insuring and driving it in the mean time?
Or is it a no no have to wait till its assigned a new number before I can buy and use it ?

If you go to your local DVLA licencing office they will take payment and check detials but WILL NOT give you your replacement tax disc there. It will be forwarded in the post.

So, you can put the original age related plate back on within a few days. Then the log book will come from Swansea and can take up to 4 weeks they say, but Ive never waited longer than 2. Then you can change keepers which will be another 2-3 weeks.

It's a right pain in the arse now.

Mine took 2 weeks, although I've done them before and had it done quicker.

Just insure it on the reg number that's on it, but you might need to see if they charge an admin fee to change it to the new reg.

They wouldn't do that at the Reading VRO. It had to be sent off to Swansea as they told me it's no longer done in house by them.

No it's not but they will check the documents so you don't have to post them in. Then it will take even longer.

if the sellers ok you can sell the car with receipt stating plate not included, straight to dvla and they will give it a plate normally the cars old one if your lucky the chap will still have the plates, so they drive away on your private reg but next day once you have let them know they plut the old plates on and you forward the paperwork when arrives, only a few buyers like it that way tho
