I was, for 2 years while at University in Plymouth.
I joined up with 300 Troop, 131 Independent Commando Squadron Royal Engineers (v). The Unit role was to supply Bulk Fuel Installation support to 3 Commando when on excercise. Sadly due to my studies I never went on any operational ex ercises so I never did any proper soldiering![tiff](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/punchballs.gif)
We did a lot of training in the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia, which was a hell of a drive away from Plymouth at weekends. Also did some weekends and a couple of 2 week courses at Gibraltar Barracks in Surrey.
Was great fun and blinking hard work as you'd expect. Once upon a time I was a fit and healthy active bloke.
Deffo couldn't do it again now though, I've turned into a lazy slob![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
My advice if you are thinking of doing is consider how much time you have to give to it. Most TA units issue a Bounty (tax free lump of cash) for your attendance, as a minimum it's normally 1 weekeday eve, 14 weekends (IIRC) and 2 weeks training course per year.
Our place had a good social scene though, so after training it was off into town for drinks. Most weekends even if no specific training was on, they organised other social or physical training activities (getting paid to climb Snowdon, and ride on fast assault boats in Plymouth Sound was cool
)
The Commando training will kill you if you're not fit enough before hand. I went in feeling fitter than I guess "average" and I found myself at the bottom of the pile physically. I struggled a lot with it.
I watched an old video from my training course and it brought horrible memories back for me! Running with kit was tough, blisters from cheapy boots and webbing burns were common![Sad](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif)

Seriously though, I wished I'd stuck with it now and joined up full time after Uni.
