Default Would you ever think about ?

Ringing an RS breaker / dealer to sell your Car ?

Reason i ask this SERIOUS question is i bought a car on sat that i have seen advertised just about everywhere and has been for sale for bloody months .

I rang the fella and asked what he REALISTICLY wanted for the car for a quick cash sale , anyway i went and looked at the car and bought it for very very close to the asking price

I asked the seller why after weeks and weeks of trying to sell his car didnt he try a dealer / breaker and his reply was

" i didnt think you would be intrested "

how the hell can a dealer not be intrested

He also said i didnt think you would pay over £1500 for a cossie

I asked him why do you think that , his reply " i dont know "

So my question is this , Would you ever bother asking a breaker / dealer to buy your car ?

Yes i know we cant pay top money as we can only sell a car for what its worth and need to make proffit , but somtimes if you want a quick sale isnt it worth a call

, Im off to work now so look forward to the replies ( if any ) when i get home

Paul

,,PS,, ALL THE TRADER HATERS NEED NOT REPLT TO THIS POST ,, thanks , ( you know who you are ) lol,

with a trader you won't get as much money,, but you don't get all the agro involved with a private sale, sometimes it becomes emotional no matter how much info i put in an advert i always get asked a load more silly questions! at least with a trader they talk about condition, negotiate a price, come round, have a quick look over the car then hand the money over

do the traders not look at cars for sale then thinking that they would make a nice profit from being sold in bits?

but no, i wouldn't consider selling my car to a breaker as i'd much rather break it myself, unless i needed the cash money really really quickly like

I think it is just people reckon you are going to offer them peanuts so they dont bother asking.

I mean if I was selling a car (this is not a for sale post ) for £3k, I would think you guys arnt going to offer me anymore than £1800-£2000 for it, there has got to be quite a bit of profit in the car otherwise its not worth you taking the risk on it.

I think when people buy cossies then after a few months/years when they come to sell them i think they just want there money back what they paid fir the car.Like you said you carnt give them the asking price cause need to make money on it so that you can live.

Paul, you bought mine off me and offered me very close to what I wanted for it. Considering I wanted shot of it quickly, you were ideal for it.

I still have that "creative" invoice somewhere

i did have one for sale once and asked you and you didn't offer anywhere near as much for what i got for it in bits so it wasn't worth it.

i'll ask you again about this one:

I always want to get as much as possible when selling a car, so I think selling to a trader is a bit of a half arsed job (i.e. can't be bothered to deal with it myself so i'll pay someone else to sell it for me).

But at the same time it is worth getting quotes from a trader in case their value isn't too far away from how you have priced the car anyway.

i think the bottom line is everyone thinks dealers/breakers will offer peanuts and make a killing on it. yes thats business and the risks BUT obviously if you want to see something you want what you can get most for it. as GUZZLER's says its sooo much less hassle sorting it out with a dealer but the thing on everyones mind is how much am i going to loose selling it to you

i think only people that need a qhick sale or unfinnished projects will ring a trader it is less hastle and you get an answear straight away but you wont usualy get what its worth to normal folk but in times like this normal folk dong go spending fortunes on old cars so its a choice you need to make

Personally I would not ever ask a trader/breaker if they were interested, as their offers are usually an insult, and they just come across completely rude/arrogant as it's their industry, and they know best...

(no offence intended at all, and not aimed at any trader particularly. for parts they are fantastic though!!)

first time i have heard of a trader offering anywhere near an asking price, if more did this then more people would ask for an offer from you when selling.

I would

Everybody with half a brain knows their car is worth more in bits, hence everyone who can breaks their cars, so if you're selling whole, then of course if priced realistically it would definitely be attractive to a breaker, because they could release the extra revenue IMO

i would only do it as a very very last resort as i know i would cut alot less then a sale to a private buyer simply because you need to make a profit as u stated

Would imagine people would only ring a trader/breaker as a very last resort if they have had no luck selling the car privately. A trader will offer significantly less than market value/asking price purely for the reason they have to make a profit on the car at the end of the day.

I would hold out for a private sale if it was me rather than take a low offer from a trader.

There was a 92 Sapph Cossie sold local to me at the weekend, light front end damage and still runnung and driveable for £1200, bargain if you ask me and wish i had heard about it sooner

nope, only becuase when i was breaking my car i got told i wouldnt get 3-4k back on it, in the end i made just over 10k back on it and i still have a few bits left over ive used on my escort cos which i bought and paid off my debts

so simple answer is no unless they are going to offer what its actually worth, may go just under, but if i can break it myself and get the rite money then no lol

but if i want shot of the car quickly and dont care then yes id quite happy sell to a breaker thats the only time though

I can't see me ever even asking a dealer what they think my car's worth. I much prefer to buy/sell private. In general (and this isn't directed at ANYONE on PF, as I've never bought a car off anyone here) I find traders to be much pushier, and much harder to make a deal with. I really hate traders bullshiting me and all that "I've got someone coming to put a deposit down in an hour, so if you want it you'd better be quick!". I'm sure there are plenty of traders that are cool to deal with, but virtually all the ones that I've dealt with have been wankers.

Knocking down a private seller is a piece of piss if you're confident, and when it comes to selling I feel that I'm more likely to get what the car's worth, rather than factoring in that the trader has to make a profit on top.

For me the only reason to go to a dealer is that you can 'back it' if it fucks up shortly after - and did so once after foolishly purchasing a Pajero J-Top that had a cracked block.

If I did have a rusty old Saph you'd be the first person I'd call though Paul!

I asked you once about my first ever Cossie and your price wasnt even close to realistic even taking into account your profit margin, plus the fact that when I sell a car I ....
A. Write my for sale ads out perfectly
B. Price my cars correctly
C. Treat people properly on the phone even if theyre tyre kickers
D. Have it presented immaculately for any viewing.

So I think if you stick to those 4 rules your car will sell for the correct money hence no need to sell it cheap to a trader, hence why my last 7 cars have all sold inside 1 week of the ad being hosted, and that included an Escort Cossie for good money and more recently an M3 for even bigger money, people do have money to buy cars despite the problems with credit its just the owners have got to put the effort in to sell it.

I dont think people see the dealer bit, they see the breaker bit first and think well there not gonna give me what i want for the car, there just gonna be looking to buy a cheap car to break and make a profit.

I wouldn't ask a trader to buy my S1 unless I was skint, as they'd want the car for pennies. I know they want to make money and I'm not nieve enough to have not worked that one out but they'd want the car for nothing, knowing full well what she's really worth. If I needed cash quickly then it's an option but it would be an absolute last resort.

Hopefully I'll never be in that position !!!!!!!!

Well when my Old Escort cos had a minor ( pump failed when idling in the garage) oil pump failure i was fed up with it
so rang the breakers inc the OP and best i got was a offer of 4.25k for it.
That 4.25k price inc me leaving the T4 turbo on the car 18" AVEZ A's etc etc.

This was just over 3 years ago though

If i wanted to sell the car quick i would otherwise i would try sell it privately, or if i knew i could break it for more than it was worth obviously would go down that route althou as we know its not as profitable as it once was!!

I would if i wanted 2 change mine for another and wish i had a few years back!! doubt u remember but u had a flint grey one about 3yrs ago with a pj motorsport engine in, and as i had loads of spares you gave me a rough price on what the car would be worth plus to bring up as many spares as poss and would work out a price for them too!! i decided not too at the time, cant remember why now but a while after i ended up blowing the engine up in mine from an oil leak and was obviously slightly pissed off

Thanks for the replies fellas ,

The general feeling is NO , lol ,

Just from my point of view , when people are selling cars to us they want top money , Yet when buying parts they want them for nothing , lol, we cant win

I bought a 4x4 saff cosworth that was advertised on her a few weeks ago and he had it on here / ebay / PH etc etc and couldnt shift it , I gave him £250 less than it was advertised for and he was well happy that i just basicly had a very quick look and paid him

This car had 10 months MOT and yet was as rotten as hell everywhere , the back chassie legs just fell apart when i removed the rear beam ( this car was a death trap )

I say this just to show that somtimes i try to pay a fair price and dont come back moaning about a car if it isnt what i was expecting

Selling to a trader isnt always a bad experiance

thanks again for the honest replies
