Default netgear wireless router setup argh

Bought a reconditioned netgear wireless router off ebay, its come today, and can i bugger get it set up.

Did everything according to instructions, but when i type in the 192.168.1.1 it brings up the box, says to put admin for the first box, then for password to type " password" and it also says this on the back of the router

but it keeps saying authentication failed, and to contact administrator.

Rang virgin, they want nothing to do with it and wont help ( obviously )

So wondering if anyone on here can help out?

Its a netgear rangemax WNR854T

someone please help

Sarah

As Ginge said, you need to turn everything off and then back on one at a time (router then modem then PC) as LAN networks aren't quite as UPnP as they claim! Specially with Windows!

Now I pressume you are getting this message when you type in the 192.xxxxx url?

But it's not accepting the username/password combo you are trying, am I right?

If so, then as paul1rs says, you might need to try and reset it, as the stock username and password probably haven't been cleared correctly, if at all.

But before doing a hard reset, try using the default username/password. By default, the default username is [/b]admin[/b] and the default password can be any of the following : password, pass, 1234 or user

If none of the above work, then it's time to try a hard reset, as follows;
  • Press the reset button on the back until the test light blinks. This takes about 10 seconds. (To avoid accidental resets, the small button is recessed. Use a pen or paperclip to access it.)
  • Release the button
  • Wait for the router to reboot
  • Try to log in with the default password (username : admin / password : password)

If the router was not cleared, try these additional steps AFTER the router has finished rebooting;
  • Unplug the router's power.
  • Press and hold the reset button. While the button is held down, reconnect router's power.
  • Continue to hold the reset button for 20 seconds after reconnecting the power.
  • Wait for the router to reboot.
  • Log in with the default password.

If none of the above works - it may be borked!

But do me a favor, have a look on the bottom of the router and tell me what revision the WNR854T is - it could be something like FR314, FR318 or FV318. If it is, these routers require reloading the firmware in order to recover from a lost password. Download the most recent firmware from NETGEAR's Web site before proceeding.

The virgin netgear routers (WGT624v3 usually) have different defualt passwords to the regular Netgear routers. Username should be virgin and the password should be password

When you say you have two connections active - on what? The computer? What two connections are active? The LAN (wired) and the WLAN (wifi) connections?

As for the unsecured part - you need to get into the router settings (by typing 1.2.168 blah blah into the browser) to access the router config and change settings - such as adding wifi security password

as thrush said,, log back into the router..

go onto wireless settings

click wep , or something to that wording, 1 st option i think

then at the bottom of it should be a button saying " generate,,

this will then give you your ssid key for the wireless for the 1st channel i believe,,

this what i did thismoring as well as i can remember ,, lol

Youve set up the WEP on the router, now you need to set it on your PC

Just put the same key in on the laptop/pc and you'll be laughing....
