As has been said, i find brake checking quite effective. I was coming up to a roundabout on a dual carriageway not too long ago with this dozy fucking mare right on my bumper so i jumped on and off the brakes quickly, and she was driving one of those new cars where when the ABS is triggered the hazards go......oh how i laughed!! Her panicked expression combined with the hazard lights going illuminating the fact she was a total cretin really got my day off to a flyer!

To be completely honest with you though, i'm usually driving pretty close to as fast as the conditions allow so it rarely happens!

anyone who has been to southall will know that, along a stretch of lady maragret road, they have put these trafic islands into the sides of the road

now, there are about 10 of them on each side of the road in total over about the course of say 5 or 600 yards

as a bus driver, i was taught to keep the vehicle in a straight line where possible and not to swearve in and out so i do the same thing in the car and van, clipping virtually both the ones on the right and left of the road as i go past (some are in the middle and some are on the sides so you are supposed to weave in and out)

i remember some numptys that would sit on my arse so close that they wouldn't see these bollards so in the mirrors you'd see the car and then it would violently swing to the left or right depending on where the bollards were

and i've seen a few in teh past that have actually bounced off the bollards

oh how i chortled at their stupidity

the bollarsd have been put there as there are 2 schools along that stretch and they tend to slow the traffic down before anyone gets on some sort of tall equine

the IRONY of the crash it is was caused by me pulling over to the left in the hard compacted snow as a transit was on the middle of the road comming towards me,,, due to me leaving the dryer centre part of the snow for the transit i then started to slide on the snow in a straight line down hill and straight into a lampost,,, the crash was caused by me giving way to someone who was ina bigger motor so he didnt struggle to go uphill and slide on the icey snow,,,,,,

also in rush hour traffic it dont really make sense to speed, have you ever noticed you keep meeting cars that got out of the amber before you had to stop? or the car you left behind at the lights pulls up behind you at the next lights? or even the cyclist that you see 20mins after you left him and now hes going past you while you sit in traffic?

if you work it out propoerly you might save a minute or 2 thats it! motorways is a different story tho.

Ive used all of the, slow down to a crawl, rest the left foot on the brakes while dropping it two gears, hand signals etc etc.
The best i once had, was in a 30mph, chavved up Corsa a few feet from my bumper, all of the above didn't work. So i got slower and slower, eventually stopped across the road, opened, got out and slammed the door with some agression and took two steps towards this chaps car. You've never seen a 17 year old nipper look so scared in his life
