Kev - I used to have a white boxer and he had fits, we tried everything, different diet, medication etc but he still had them. He would have convulsions for a minute or two and when he came round was deaf and blind for a minute or so, even bit me once as he had no idea who I was. Would then walk into things for half hour.
Always seemed to be when he had woken from a deep sleep.
Anyway when I left my ex in Scotland I had to re-home him, the woman who took him was meant to foster dogs(I didn't want him going to kennels with the fits), she fell in love and kept him and her vet eventually found a medication that worked.
My advice is prompt your vet for different meds if the first doesn't work.
Good luck, I know it's a fucking horrible thing to watch mate!!

Perhaps it's epilepsy... You can get tablets to control it.
Does he stare into space or wander round aimlessly prior to them happening?

my eldest staffie-buster has been having fits for about 4 years now-he is about 14 years old though, maybe even older.
horrible to see and he often soils himself when he does it and cuts all his mouth, but when he comes out of it he seems ok again.he has tablets every day to try to control them which have helped but he still has them occasionally.
hope he is ok kev-looks a bonnie dog.

Toe Knee.... that particular fit that the boxer had was because of inter relation breeding!
Kev - keep him inside until you do get to see a vet, and keep his food intake quite low, just incase they do decide to keep him in for some tests!

My sisters cat has epilepsy. He only has a fit every couple of weeks so isn't on any medication. The medication for cats is quite harsh apparently, with depression and even suicidal tendencies as side effects.
Good luck Kev.

Used to have a German Shepherd that had epilepsy.
He would have fits every few months and seeing as he weighed 9st you really had to hold on to him as he would be banging into things whilst having the fit.
Also had to hope we were around when it happened as he would just drop to the floor when the fit came on.
Not nice to see, know how you feel fella lets hope its not serious.

just finding my feet
my old alsation had epilepsy, had fits alot, looked like he was turning into a wolf when he was doing it paddling hes legs about like mad
he soon stopped though when he was given phynobarbatone (sp) then he has some sort of booster after a few years when he started to fit again
when he came out the fit he would be ravenous and try anything to eat, it was also as if he was blind too based on how he patroled the house hunting for food
we discovered that hes fits was when he was sleeping/laying down for long periods too so i started taking him on long walks to keep him more active which also seemed to help
bewarned though when you first give him the meds he becomes very very wasted and clumbsey, my mut used to walk into most things for the first few weeks,,,,, then i notied he seemed to not be so alert as such and very very laied back,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, aka boring

NEVER EVER TRY TO HOLD A ANIMAL THAT IS HAVING A FIT !!!
IF IT BITES YOU THEN IT WILL CARRY ON TILL OUT OF THE FIT,,, REMEMBER THAT DOGS EAT BONES !!!
JUST MAKE THE HOUSE "FIT PROOF" AND MOVE STUF FROM THE DOG SO HE DONT BANG INTO THINGS
sorry for caps
anyway i was told to let the dog do as it is, may not seem normal but the risk of the dog biting by accident or anything else is very high if the dog has alot of fits, mine use to every few days before the meds

I laughed when she told me funnily enough.
Basically they just give up and refuse to eat. My sis also said they can try and get themselves run over but I don't know if she was winding up or not then.

my last staffie also called buster started having fits
he had a couple over a few weeks but then had a major one at about 6-30am
his eyes were flicking from left to right
we took him to the emergency vets who sadly put him to sleep
he was estimated to be 14-15 years old and we had him as a rescue for the last ten years
hope yours is better news and can be controlled as he is a lot younger

Right folks, back from the vets, and i feel quite reassured, he hasnt had a fit today, it wasnt as bad as the boxer that was on the tv, its mostly his head shaking and he doesnt actually collapse, just shakes badly.
vet recons it could be a mild epileptic fit, so has put him on a course of diazepam, he doesnt want to start doing blood tests or anything yet i have jut to keep my eye on him for the next couple of weeks,
he also doesnt want to start any long term medication as he says he could be on it for 10 years but without it he may not fit again anyway....so fingers crossed i,m hoping its just been a little funny turn he has had
thanks for the kind words everyone

Our Labrador had Epilepsy from about 12 months old. The vet was 99% certain it was due to "close breeding" within the dogs family.
The poor thing was on medication everyday and steadily they (the fits) got more and more frequent up to the age of about 7. Eventually the levels of medication she was on started to make her unwell (basically they were removing the lining on her stomach and she was sick most days), and she passed away in a fit just before her 8th birthday.
She was one of the most loving, loyal and protective dogs ive ever owned, and it broke my heart to see her like that, ( i was with her when she died) and to this day, ive never had another dog.
Hope your staffi gets sorted out mate, cos even though they are animals, you still worry to death about them.
