What exactly do you think will happen when you try and exceed 15000 rpm with a YB then? Please enlighten us all.

5th to 2nd used to see loads of rst's that had done that, most would go again with a few valves, i think yours is needing a bit more than that.......

why do people think that because a cars just been set up that it has something to do with it i remember buying a 3 door off Spadge, it blew up a couple of weeks later, at the time i was racing my friend in his evo, the 3 door had run out of speedo, went lean top end & blew, totally my fault & i admitted it, Spadge sent me a message to thanks as i pointed out it was not the cars fault

get real

what do think will happen would you expect a saff to do 100mph in 2nd this a classic problem, the engine revs so hard it valve heads literaly get 'ripped' off

isnt there rev limiters to prevent this from happening in situations like this?im no engine expert but im sure weve all jumped gears by mistake and ive not blown an engine because of it yet.

now that leads me to believe its him rather than the engine at fault. once is bad luck, twice is unfortunate 5 is downright reckless.

A common misconception actually so a fair question pal.
The rev limiter prevents the engine being accelerated by fuel and air, in as much as it limits fuel or spark so the engine cant go any faster.

However, if your clutch is engaged, the engine will run as fast as the road wheels and gearbox dictate. To picture this Imagine putting your car in gear and rolling it down a hill... same way as you jump start one) Well imagine doing that, at 100mph, then selecting second!

Another way to think of it is this, if your engine does 60mph at 7500rpm in second then at 120mph, if your select second, the road wheels will force the engine to rotate at 15000rpm.

oops

having had virtually the same experience with the 3 door (but i went from 4th to 3rd and not 5th at the limiter, while overtaking a transit on the motorway of all things ) i bent some valves, killed the clutch and had to dissect the instrument cluster as the rev counter needle jammed itself next to the fuel gauge seperator

i got it fixed as it was my fault for being a twat so fair play to your mate

Rev limiters kill the spark but they can't physically stop an engine from spinning when engaged into 2nd from xxxmph in 5th

Edit: bit of a slow response

a rev limit will prevent the fuel from being ignited, but its still possible to make it rev way past the limit by doing exactly what the lad did on the motorway (5th -2nd)

you can go and try it yourself, but i wouldnt recommend it!

well its only 10.30 am and ive learned something new already.ignorance is sometimes bliss though as itll only give me something else to worry about now
but then quickly depressing the clutch as soon as the wrong gear was selected should have prevented it reaching this state?

Yes - u can usually hear the synchromesh super winding up when u select a totally wrong gear, BEFORE u let the clutch pedal up.

When mucking about with a new car it is best to take ur time on the gear change till u are used to the subtle differences.

THe best way to think about an engine vs road speed is: When u are in gear and u let the clutch out the engine and the road are basically "connected". So every meter u travel, the engine rotates, no matter what (unless the clutch slips). SO if you were doing 200mph and select a gear (as Stu explains) as soon as u let the clutch out, the engine and the road are connected and the engine MUST spin at the speed relative to the road speed vs the gear ratio. Sometime u can be lucky and it locks up the driven wheels if the rpm is just too high.

Ouch!!

Did a similar thing to my series 2 a few years back on the way to southend!
Went to go from 5th to 4th at 90 mph and accidentily grabbed 2nd!

That was the end of that night! Had to get towed home by Guzzler!

Once stripped down found 4 bent exhaust valves. Replaced them and fitted a new cam at the same time. Job done!

Hope you get it sorted!
