My techs are on 25% off labour sales that they make. I've got a tech that does 11 hours a day, and no lunch. Earns 50k a year. Vaux dealer.

Motor trade wages are crap. I'm a panel beater and I've always had to put up with poor wages. I'm now doing restorations on high end classic cars and the money is loads better.

I can't believe how bad wages are in the motor trade. I'm glad I stayed away.

As a 3rd year apprentice in the Electrical Contracting industry I take home £10.40 an hour!
When I qualify in around 18 months time it will go up to around £13.50 an hour.

I'm a mechanic/mot tester/receptionist and part admin for a fast fit side of a massive ford dealership in the East Midlands the wages are poo but now the bonuses have been reviewed it should be a decent wage
the only thing I would suggest is become a manager the wage is a lot better or work smarter not harder it's easyer than it sounds you just need to know where the money is bonus wise or budget wise

The money in automotive manufacturing used to be great with a big firm like ford/vauxhall, I never dipped below £50k in the last 4/5 years I was there say between 2004-2009 regularly topped £60k with great holidays, full sick etc.

That's strong money for working on wagons though, I don't get a lot more than that take home per month as an offshore spark (£3700) although I do get a 20% bonus which is like a double wage twice a year and only work 140 days a year.

Free food and drink as well I suppose!!!!

Cheerd James. The grey connecter that is in the electrical box under the bonnet was faulty. It eventually snapped so I had to repair the wire.

If you're prepared to work outside and get up very early, mobile is the way to go. Lots of fleet companies these days with vans for service/repair and lorries that need safety inspections. I get way more than I'd ever get being a regular tech. It's not for everyone though, I took a mate out to work with me (who was after a job) and he's a senior tech at nissan. He really didn't like getting up at 4am and driving 80 miles then starting work in the dark and wet in a yard full of rowdy road workers with totally abused transits all wanting to get out to work. Then you're looking at a full service, front and rear pads, bulbs, wipers and whatever else you find in about an hour and half max.

The prices for certain repairs are ridiculous nowadays, like one of our regulars is a 24hr call out for any mechanical work and he showed me an invoice written out at 2:15am by the black wall tunnel to repair a flat on the side of the road £180

2 of them a day would suite me down to a t

Yeh that is a bonus depending where you work

You get stuff like this as a bonus like £500 worth of welding and it was rotten as a pear (well undercharged)

i am a workshop supervisor for the largest bus operator in the world, £11.44ph.
i think they only keep me because i can weld and do the heavey jobs.
i stopped doing overtime because it only paid time, i'm going to push for time and a half. problem is young kids are coming in and think the wage is great, and do anything the boss asks so they dont get binned.

yeah, and with cars theres always someone down the pub who says its cheap and easy to fix.
someone asked me how much to do front and rear pads on a 2year old corsa? gave a price of around £50+parts. then told a large retailer charged £286. customer was happy with the price because professional mechanics had done it. 6 months on they still have a spongey pedal and keep asking me to look at it.

That's terrible money for hgv I work for Adams Morey and I'm on 13.50 an hour. Every thing I do after 8hrs is time and a half and there's no limit on over time if you can justify booking it you can do it! Saturdays time and a half Sundays double time. I also do daf aid which is 10 pounds a day stand by 25 pounds per call out and I get payed 2hrs for each job but if it takes longer than 2hrs I get how long it actcherly takes

Yep sounds about right, as I always say to my customers who say its cheaper somewhere else "you go there then and ill see you in a week" and they looked puzzled

In all fairness most are cheap and still give a good quality

if a customer says that they can get it done cheaper i tell them to go get it done. when its not right i tell them to take it back to whoever did it, and i wont do jobs for them again. even when they offer to pay me more.

Well safe lol, had to build the drivers floor and inner and outer sills and that was the only way to do it, best thing was seeing the amount of water coming out the shell when it was jacked up

I bet your not lol! That's not every month but has been for a good few now as work is very busy! As I say I do daf aid call out every 3rd week so can be called out any time of the night or week end. Some nights and mornings 2 or 3 times in the cold or wet. I do earn well out of it but I've been doing it a long time and they get there money's worth lol
