ok, having a little discussion on 205 forum and Rapidcossie has mentioned the need for a nice gap from the trumpet to the filter
my TB'S look like this and as you can see a ITG filter will go straight on,

another guy has this setup

and another guy has this setup

anyone know the answer to what the best setup???

Not speaking from experience or great general knowledge on the issue, but one of the most governing factors that people have influence their decision over a filter is the space they have. Especially in most Fords where the inlet manifold is glued to the bulkhead, there really is limited room. It's all about how the air flows basically. You don't want turbulent air flow, you want as smooth a flow of air as possible in order to get the maximum amount possible into the trumpets at the fastest velocity. I don't think there is much wrong with EITHER of the two setups you have shown. I reckon if anything, the first setup is better but either would be as good in my opinion.

I've got one of these on my bodies and it's fine.. lets buckets of air in with minimal ristriction:

One of my friends runs the same set-up but got kicked off a track day because the car was too loud.
I was considering one of these though to quieting things down a tad:

There is the pricey option too![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)

socks are'nt regarded as brilliant, as there is a mis-conception that they get sucked into the inlet under heavy accelleration. although true of earlier types they dont do it anymore if you put them on properly and secure them behind the trumpet with a ty-wrap or something!
either set-up would be fine and as said above is mostly governed by space and cost. the last time i looked, socks are cheaper than the air box, but the airbox used up less space!

A good filter should be so free flowing that its distance doesnt greatly matter.
Loads of the XE boys are running big power with a domed ITG filter only an inch or two away from the trumpets from where its bolted up straight to the backing plate.
I'd just do that if I were you.

Binned the socks!
I'm going to try the above with the airbox (which I have) but can weld the base plate to the trumpets futher forward. Providing I have room!
Problem is, without it being mapped I don't want to drive it to the mapping place with socks on, in case of fire.

if you can't get any for of filter on or at least a sock, at very best run some sort of thick mesh so it will stop anything from being sucked in.
I must admit many moons ago i ran my 2.0 16v nova without any form of filter for over a yr

its surprising just how much sh*t you suck in on trackdays.
i run my m3 without headlamps with just mesh in front of the air filter.i have had some running problems where the car runs very flat and have ended up removing all the inlet manifold, had the injectors cleaned, new fuel lines, filter, press reg, afm, lamdas.
just built it all up and was about to refit the induction kit so decided to clean it up a little and the cone filter inside was completely blocked with thick shit-as this was the only way air could get into the engine im presuming this was the original problem!
how stupid to overlook one of the basic things!![Red Faced](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_redface.gif)
its been cleaned out overnight and you can now see through it,so im hoping it will al be fine when back together now.

well spoke to my mapper again
and have decided on this one
[url=http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p163/ITG-FILTER-JC50-65/product_info.html [ ITG JC 50 /65[/url]
this gives 50mm from trumpet to filter![Big Grin](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif)
and will put some carbon fibre sheilding above the rad (to copy rapidcossie.lol)
that should reduce heat soak and direct the air from the grill to the filter
