Default computer boffs

If my Mother board supports a cpu which runs with a Bus speed of 333 MHz then i put a new cpu which runs at a Bus speed of 400 MHz am i right in saying the new cpu will run absolutely ok but only at 333MHz?

as long as the architecture is the same and that you do not exceed the number of cores supported by the mobo the answer is yes.

How can i tell the differences between the numbe of cores and the architecture?

Why is it then if you plug a dual core processor into a early pcchips board supporting socket 939 single core processors, it does not work? - The socket is the same?

ok thanks

but it would be an xp 2200 cpu for a xp 3200 cpu so pretty much like for except for the bus speed, so i presume this would still be ok?

i meant dont worry about the cores in this instance as he has booted the pc therefore he knows that the core of the processor must match the motherboard as it has booted.

Sorry just felt that he didnt need confusing any more than neccesary thats all.

which mobo, there will be a list of supported CPUs somewhere for it. you'll probably want to do a BIOS update so it's got all the latest CPUID support
