Anyone else watch
Air crash investigation? I have only just started to watch it this week and I have to say I find it really interesting! How they piece it all together etc just fascinates me!Although it does worry me how many faults they find on planes etc!

Absolutely love that program. Seen all the episodes from series 1 to 6 now and they are showing the second episode of season 7 tonight at 2300 on Nat Geo
The first episode of season 7 was the 20 year anniversary of Lockerbie (spelling) - that was quite a hard hitting "lump in your throat" episode

Watch one a couple of days ago,can not remember what the name on the plane was(it was flew by Alaska airways and i had been on one with AA for my connection flight in usa)the rear stabiliser got stuck as was constantly pushing the nose down the pilots managed to control it,but after a while the whole stabiliser gave up and the plane just went into a dive as was rolling all the way down it took a minute for it too hit the sea,and they reckon everyone was alive until impact!feck that!!!!
They traced it to lack of oil/maintenance on the worm gear that controls the stabiliser!they checked all of the same planes in the fleet and found 8 of the 14 had the same problem! It is a critical part of the plane that has no back up if it goes wrong(still to this day!)
Here is the plane that i went on and is the same!

Mechanic28 - That was when service intervals were extended on the DC10/MD83 fleet and the jackscrew servicing/greasing/renewal was overlooked by superiors in favour of cost cutting - unfortunately, in the design of the tailwing on the DC10/MD83, there is no redundancy and a complete failure as happened on that aircraft means certain disaster unfortunately
Personally I love the DC10 aircraft, such a brilliant machine. Just a shame that after a few major issues with them falling out of the sky Mcdonnald Douglas went bust and Boeing bought them

thats it!lol!just abit worrying that they know its a critical part of they plane yet they have no back up for it which i thought was part and parcel of a plane getting its airworthiness certificate?Fecking hell do they throw them planes about in the air!!or at least the pilot did on the one i was on both there and back lol!

Think of an aeroplane like an old cosworth - if you bodge it and piss about then it will break in the middle of nowhere with no help from anyone

I went on my first every plane last year all the way to usa on a 777 then connect flight on one of those planes! When at heathrow I was fine until i saw the plane i had to go for a nervous dump it was so bad i blocked the toilet ,once in the plane (window seat)i was fine again,i read all the safety leaflets planned my escape made sure my life jacket and the all important whistle were present.Take off i was okish it just worried me how much everything shaked and rattled lol!after that i was fine as i came to terms if it goes wrong i am dead either way.Landing did not bother me for some reason. But the connection flight was a different story we took off and climbed at a ridiculous angle lol!and the way the kept banking the fecker over was rather worrying! Now i am watching these not sure i want to go on a plane again lol!

Nice long plane journey for your first flight :ek:
Mind you, My first flight was a 747 from Manchester to Chicargo and then enjoyed an MD83 from Chicargo to Las Vegas
Altho before we left Manchester the captain had to get maintenence to the plane as one of the generators wasn't working - they said it would be fine as th APU was working

yer mine was to Chicargo as well then on to indianapolis! problem with me i can not sit still for long,I had to keep getting up and going for walks on the 777 lol!although i was impressed with the amount of leg room we got in cattle class(I am 6ft 3ins)I am hoping to go las vegas this year but i think its going to be a direct flight on a 747,the friend who i going with says i will hate it as the leg room on a 747 in crap to say the least
On our connect flight we was delayed as they had to put more fuel on to fly around a thunder storm

747's are fantastic aircraft, and DC-10's are the most horrid pieces of shit ever made
If you want to see them chucking a big aircraft around, this is what I work on in the RAF

C17 is quite impressive to watch, and can actually use reverse thrust inflight to steepend the decent!!
Most aircraft with reversing pitch propellors can reverse themselves.
