strange prob with starter motor..
i was coming home the other day.. and noticed my battery wasnt charging/holding power managed t get home fine and discovered the silly little wire that goes to the alternator (blue one) was disconected.. i reconected this and went to start the car.. but it wouldnt start.. i turned the key and the starter gave one turn then stopped.. thought fair enough maybe the bat is too flat to start it... so i push started it.. mint no probs.. took it for a spin at the batt began to charge fine..
got back home.. turned it off and went to start it again.. and the same thing happened..
thought i would try arcing the starter to see what happened.. first it made some horrible noises! then it turned over and started fine!
however if i tried to do it on the key i wouldnt have it, the solenoid would just click and the starter turn a TINY bit.
What would cause this to happen? the starter is obviously strong enough to start the car just not from the key!
So far ive replaced the little blue wire from the alternator, and the wire that goes onto the solenoid as they were verry tatty, (ie been joined about 10 times before after previous engine changes! )
This has made absolutely no difference though..
Any help appreciated as i cant go anywhere as i have to push start the car or look like a tool with the bonnet up arcing the starter!

although the battery can have voltage it may not have cranking amp. have u changed the battery? if the battery is fully charged and u leave it does it drain? i had a similar prob and it was an earth that went from batt to bell housing ( this was on a twin cam saph) and it killed battery aswell.
hope this helps

CheeRS mate but the battery is fairly new.. and is a fucking HUGE transit one.. and like i say the start will turn over and start if you arc it.. just not from the key..
which leads me to believe its a wiring problem.. hence ive changed the obvious part of the wiring and wanted a little more advise before i start cutting anymore of the loom out!
