I don't know what it's called but there's one device you fit to your car which you can use to automatically open your electric garage door when you drive up to it. It just so happens to interfere with all radar guns too.

and is illegal.radar detectors are not much use because by the time it detects the radar its to late for you to slow down. it gives a reminder on fixed camera spots and thats about it.

you really dont understand radar detectors do you?the radar signal from the cops gun has to travel to the car and back to give a reading,so twice the distance from you to the gun.whereas your detectector merely has to receive the signal in one direction to flag up the signal that the gun is being used.so as long as the range of the detector has anything over half the range of the gun you will be notified before the police get a reading.

and how long do you think it takes for the radar to travel back to the police once its hit you ? its already travelled half the distance to reach you before you know it .do you have the relexes of superman to slow your car down quicker than the radar waves can travel?
even if you did, the radar gun has clocked your speed so even if you do slow down theyve got you anyway.
radar detectors work on the theory that you might pick up radar scatter from the car targetted in front of you, giving you a few seconds to respond. if your being targetted your caught.
thats how i understand radar detectors to work.

wasnt there a program on the box last week reviewing detectors, they tested one that worked on snidey hidden hand held ones as well as fixed, worked very well but was £1500,still was the best, road angle came in second was good for fixed cameras, plus you can update its system if you see a camera and then its on the database for all user's.......

well,if they are clocking you from 1/4 mile away then their radar is going out to half a mile.so if youre radar detector has that range then you have 1/4 mile to slow down.i should think thats enough dont you?

your not getting it, when the signals travelling back it already has you clocked at your speed so slowing down makes no difference. the detector doesnt pick up the radar waves from half a mile away it detects them when they hit you and bounces back and picks up your speed at that point then you have no time to react or slow down.

you really dont understand this do you!?

The radar beam that is reflected contains all the information needed to prosecute, i.e your current speed when the beam hit your car....so it doesnt matter what you do, once the beam has hit your car they have their info. Slow down, speed up it doesnt matter from that point on.....the next quarter of a mile is what you will cover to get to them pulling you over!

Edit: You can of course use a radar blocker (the garage opening device) in conjunction with a detector to block the signal temporarily whilst you hammer the brakes on - but these are 100% illegal and if the police suspect you are using one will go to town on your arse. Its obvious when one is being used as the radar gun wont lock which only occurs in rare circumstances and when being deliberately blocked.

Radar travels at either the speed of sound or the speed of light, but I can't recall which.

What I can remember is that if it hits you, there is no human able to react, or car able to overcome the laws of physics, and slow down in time.

As said above, the purpose of a radar detector is to pick up the scatter from someone else being targetted.

Radar is speed of light...186,282 miles per second!

i think thats something like 0.000000000001seconds for the electronics to register the radar beam, light the LED, your eyes to see it, brain to react, foot to go to brake and brakes to reduce speed by whatever over 70 you are....not even the stig could manage that! LOL

your traveling at say 70mph in a 60.you have a quarter of a mile to the radar point. the radars travelling at the speed of light which if the figure quoted above is correct thats over 11 million miles an hour. you think you can outrun it?

radar is the least to worry about, your more likely to be collared by laser get a jammer. Used properly ie: switched off after being alerted to laser, they will not know you have one fitted. It is not uncommon for them to get a misreading or two before they actually record your speed so think its normal.

Exactly. They haven't used Radar in the UK for years

Though my Origin B2 has Laser detection, it's mainly useful if they aren't targetting your car and you can get the "scatter" from the reflected laser.

Careful with a Jammers though. Guy (with IIRC a Range Rover) got zapped a few times and they never got a reading because of the jammer. After the 4th or 5th time the police got suspicous so arranged to have the car impounded. They found the jammer and charged him with for "perverting the course of justice" Ultimately it was dropped but it's something to be wary of.

Have a little read of http://www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/jamlaw.htm

It's not clear if the rules have actually outlawed Laser detectors at the moment. Jammers can also open electronic gates/garage doors so if you have that fitted you may be able to explain their presence on your car.

Road Angel, Pogo, Snooper all get reasonable reviews. But don't rely solely on ANY of them to save you. You still need to be aware.

It was on 5th Gear last Monday,

Can't remember the name of it, but it detected everything.

Perhaps check the 5th Gear website, should have all the details on it.
