Hello... noobie questions. Mainly MT75 4x4 gearbox...
Hello, nice to meet you...
This seems like a good place to ask:
1. Anybody know for sure if there is any difference between the MT75 4x4 boxes in 2 litre DOHC XR4x4s and 4x4 cossies (escort or sierra)? I've heard rumours of tweaks (oil flow, third gear synchro) but is this between different models, or rather, development over time accross all models?
I have both boxes sitting here (cossie and dohc 4be) and they look identical. Is there any way to tell them apart or are they just the same?
2. Is there any way to fit a hydraulic clutch to the 4x4 MT75? I know somebody who built a 4x4 V8 Dax Rush who said he used a mondeo concentric clutch slave and it 'bolted right in' as far as he could remember. But in both my boxes there is nowhere to bolt anything in the bellhousing. Perhaps his model had some holes tapped in the bit that screws in round the input shaft?? Or are all 4x4s up to latest scort cable clutch? Someone at Interford reckoned someone here has fitted a hydraulic to the MT75.
3. Also, i have front props from two V6 4x4s which are the solid shaft type. The DOHC front prop is fat and tubular. Any idea what sort of prop a 4x4 cossie would have had? Anybody know if the tubular is stronger/torsionally stiffer than the solid shaft, or vice versa??
4. Something I've wanted to put to rest for ages, and i bet you guys know. Granada and Sierra driveshafts - are they the same length?? I believe grandad track is quoted as a tiny bit wider than sierra, but is this just taken up in the float of the CVs? What about regarding 4x4 grannies and sierras?
5. Oh and finally - 4x4 MT75 gearchange... A friend of mine has a rather nice XR4x4 with the 24v lump. He takes an age to change gear and complains he really can't do it quicker without upseting his box. Is he a ponce taking mechanical sympathy to new extremes or is the box very slow to change. Is it perhaps a wear issue? My cossie box is brand new (never been used despite being about 15 years old) so perhaps i'll be OK?
Right, that'll do. Thanks for reading this and any help would be appreciated.
By the way...In case anybody is wondering, I'm building a 4x4 seven type car (inspired by the Dax Rush 4x4) but my own design. I'm at rolling chassis stage with the chassis, suspension and drivetrain install all done. Next on the list is to panel the chassis and get the engine running (honda V6 - sorry guys but it's ally =)).
Thanks
Liam

hello
1)...the xr4x4 box has different fix points then the mt75. the only difference between the escos box and the saff box is the different fixing point for the shaft.
dont know about the strenght difference btween the xr4x4 and the mt75.
2)...martin hadland can do a hydraulic conversion for you.
3)...the cossie front pop shaft is tubular. dont know if its stronger.
4)...dont know
5)...a mt75 is not the fastest box for gearchange....but there are kits for it to make the geartravel shorter.

i was told the differnce between the xr4x4 box is
1 the 2,9 the gear ratios and everything are the same but the clutch arm is ooposite sides
2 the 2.0 xr and cossie is the same except u may get a bit more top end?
this is what im using in my cossie
3 the escort and sierra use same internals as xr except the escort has a longer main shaft for the different rubber donught
if that helps

Hello
Thanks for the replies. I know there are big physical differences between the V6 xr boxes and the cossies (bellhousing and clutch), but i'm wondering about internal differences between 2.0 DOHC XR and cossie boxes which appear to be identical outside.
Anyone know how to contact Martin Hadland? That was the guy they mentioned on Interford. Anyone know if his was a concentric clutch cylinder in the bellhousing or a push type piston acting on the standard arm and release bearing?
Cheers
Liam
