Default Focus ST170 - what they like?

Hi guys

Im thinking of changing my 2.2 astra coupe, and looking into getting a focus st170.

What tuning potential do these have?

im not thinking about turbo or supercharging, what mods do these respond well to?

what sort of power can 170s push out when fettled with?

Think about 180-190bhp with the usual sort of mods. Exhaust cam vernier with slight adjustment (can't remember if it is advance or retard) gives more power (about 8-10bhp iirc).

so theyre just as bad tuning wise as my 2.2 astra.
i wanted to focus on power from my next car, but at the same time again, didnt want to have to spend thousands and acheiving very little

what sort of power have people seen the st push out?

Why not just trade your astra in for a turbo version?

Or why not go for a Focus RS? If you want to go quick for not much money look at a 180SX or S13.

ST170 is already fairly well tuned....you could go throttlebodies and a management swap for that last bit and some wilder cams but even then it will detract from its roadcar performance if you're not careful.

There are better bases for power tho in that price range if power is your thing.

Altho you say you want to concentrate on power but dont want to turbo or supercharge....only leaves N/a tuning, and thats expensive in terms of £'s per bhp

If that's your aim you need to start off with a car with a turbo! N/A gains are always going to cost more (pound per bhp) than a car with forced induction.

Great cars.
I would put a suprecharger or a turbo on one, and dont worry about the box breaking, they can take far more power than standard.

You would probably get another 10-15 HP with a 170 with bolt ons and a tune. Your looking at around 150-155 hp to the wheels with the bolt ons.

Theres not much more you can do to then as they are almost maxed out N/A. Unless you put ALOT of money into it for a N/A build can get up over 200 hp

I have put a supercharger on mine and I am at 244 hp to the wheels. Superchargers are very hard to come by for the ST170s now.

I gave mine absolute death when i had it - revs were rarely below 5k. Lapped it up and never gave me a moments grief!

VERY nice cars and not a lot of money now. Think i got £4k for mine in part ex last summer

They are excellent value for money now in the current climate. Would've fetched easy £6-£8k before now £4-£5.5k, £6k for a proper minter!

I love mine to death

310bhp turbo conversionwith more to come....

If you staying N/A you'll be looking at 190 tops without spending loads of dough.
Induction kit
Exhaust
Decat
Cam vernier
Remap (Bluefin etc)

Much under rated car IMO. Handle really well and good spec.

wish id kept mine now, it had every conceivable extra that ford made at the time including Full leather all round.
The best mod i ever did to mine and made a noticeable difference was a k&n filter.

Maybe you got a bad one?

I used to be able to get 320miles to a tank out of mine if i was just cruising on the motorway - admittedly that went down to around 260 if i had a bit of fun...

Power wise - driven properly they were ok and that went for handling too!

Did you try driving any others?

I got 380 to tank on a run.

The handling is great, never heard a bad review of that before now
