Cat C write off
I bought a car off a work mate which his mrs had a crash in, I presumed it was going to be a cat D when I said I'd buy it (as it was pretty superficial damage)
When I spoke to him about the car I asked if her ins company said what catagory it was in and he said the woman from the ins co. said cat C.
Now, I was under the impression that cat C meant V5 back and MOT back to ins co and they send to dvla and you need a vic check to get them back (when repaired) But the ins co never asked for these back and the woman on the phone said to her that anyone can repair it.
I have the full v5, MOT and it's taxed for a few months etc.
Anyone know whether I can find out for sure what cat it's in? Should the ins company deffinately take the V5 and MOT of it's cat C?

Depends, if your mate has kept the car then it's likely they didnt bother with the V5 as they know he was keeping it for salvage etc..
If the insurance company actually has the car in their posession, i.e insurance compound or salvage yard...thats when they normally get sent away to dvla.
I could be wrong but there seems to be nothing to worry about...other than it being cat C not cat B like you thought
What car is it?

I bought a damaged cat c escort rs turbo and when i hpi'd it, it came back clear and they never took the log book or mot off the guy who had the payout. Might be a similar situation with yours?
usually a cat c needs vic test and v5 needs to be applied for but could be that they didn't bother as said above don't know why they didn't but the only way to check for certain is to do hpi check on it i would of thought
the car will still need a vic. what will happen is when someone buys it and you send the logbook off for them they will get a letter telling them the car is in there name but they cannot have a v5 untill the check has been done, its v simple 15 min chassis engine number check, in regards to mot cert either dont get one as it will be ont he system anyway you can check online, or get a duplicate
