Default Cat C write off

I bought a car off a work mate which his mrs had a crash in, I presumed it was going to be a cat D when I said I'd buy it (as it was pretty superficial damage)

When I spoke to him about the car I asked if her ins company said what catagory it was in and he said the woman from the ins co. said cat C.

Now, I was under the impression that cat C meant V5 back and MOT back to ins co and they send to dvla and you need a vic check to get them back (when repaired) But the ins co never asked for these back and the woman on the phone said to her that anyone can repair it.

I have the full v5, MOT and it's taxed for a few months etc.

Anyone know whether I can find out for sure what cat it's in? Should the ins company deffinately take the V5 and MOT of it's cat C?
