Default Nail in tyre? Claim?!?!

Evening lads,

Having a bit of an argument with my dad at the moment. Story goes as follows:

He got a nail in one of his tyres, probably from the builders a few doors down and I do find nails on the road around there and have a good mind to make my feelings known but that's another matter. A woman at his workplace told him that she got a nail in her tyre and she claimed off her local council and got the money to replace it. Now I know for potholes you can claim as the council or highways agency has a right to maintain the highway to a set standard but a nail in the tyre? Sure they must keep the roads clean but would they seriously give in to this?

I'm arguing first of all that if this was the case whenever you got a nail in your tyre this would be exploited by thousands of people or even when your tyre gets worn you could shove a screw in it and get the council to pay for brand new tyres. Second of all this sounds very trivial and frankly ludicrous to me that the council could give in to something like this and third of all I can imagine the council turning around and saying that they fulfil their cleaning rota or targets or whatever and can't possibly man the roads 24/7.

What do you guys make of this? Anyone done this before or know the law in regards to this? I asked my dad how long ago the woman did this as they may have covered themselves by now if it was long ago but she didn't say.

Discuss....

Thanks!!

I've never heard of anyone claiming for a nail in a tyre and very much doubt anyone would accept responsibility, let alone pay out! If you were driving behind a lorry and a box of screws fell out then you could claim, but to pick up a random one, you've no chance of claiming!

I was under the impression you can't. I'm sure I've asked before and been told run flats cannot be plugged like normal tyres.

As said, its still a grey area as they are relatively new on the market (well, they have been about since the mid 80's, but only on the porsche 956(?)) but we have been plugging them for a couple of years and not had a problem, Bridgestone rep approved anyway!
We have even had a few major repaired, they are no different to a normal tyre, its just the sidewall is about 8 times thicker than usual.
