Default does this mean anything to you ?

driving along in focus at 2.4krpm in 5th at around 40-50mph on the flat (tamar bridge if you must know)..

suddenly the MPH dial swisses to 0 and where it says total mileage and underneath where it says journey mileage, it goes a bit funny like this :

instead of

584859
958

it reads

-------
-------

Car is a 99 ford focus 1.6 lx base model.

It done it a few times in past but doesnt appear to be a fault, could be an error code ?

thankyou

id say it wasnt a fault with the speed sensor in the gearbox, as if that was faulty, surely the dials would just think the car was stationary, and it wouldnt effect the odometer. probably a problem with the instrument cluster, or maaaybe a loose wire somewhere on the plug, probably internal though.

Only way is to take it in and get a diagnostic.

I was going to get a vag-com disgnostic on my old golf when it kept going into limp mode, but VW wanted Ł200 just to plug in a laptop, so id assume ford want the same sort of money tho?

if its just a wiring fault somewhere in the instrument cluster it wont show a fault code id imagine. i cant really see it being anything else either? just get a new cluster and see if it stops.

If it was only the MPH and odometer affected it's the VSS in the gearbox.
If other instruments were affected it's the complete cluster.
There is a known fault with clusters and Ford will fit a new one free.....In your dreams.

The speedo on my wife's Focus occasionally stops working for a few moments then comes back to life. I presume that's just the VSS then?

if it was the VSS not giving the clocks a signal for a second or two, then surely the speedo would just go to zero, and the odometer wouldnt be effected? in the exact same way as if you came to a stop, or the brakes locked up for instance.

im not convinced its the VSS but im no expert!

Hi fit a new speed sensor to the gear box . the speed sensor sends a signal to a ecu under the dash that then sends a signal to the dash if the gear box stops sending a signal it can confuse the odometer.

IIRC he sold it 6 months ago and now owns a passat diesel, so you might be a little late with your advice there, this post is 9 months old.
