FAO Ex cossie owners? When did you give up and why?

Well, I had two castaphrophic engine failures (9.9 on the richter scale) after having my car "managed" by Engine Advantages, I got shafted big time and then basically lost my confidence! Even after I had a proper new engine built by Harvey Gibbs which truly was excellent, I was still traumatised by the sound of conrods getting fresh air and bits of block landing on my camcover and battery tray and bouncing under the transmission tunnel. It's a sound I will never forget and never want to hear again....so I sold my car to a rich Irish millionaire for an amount I simply could not refuse and bought a Porche 996 Turbo which you have seen on my drive Wil.
So thats why I personally got out of Cosworths!! I now have a 500bhp supercar that does 190mph (out of the box) that does not break or needed 30 grand spent on it to get it to do 190mph. Good reason??

You still having bad luck Will? Chin up mate I really think it will be worth it in the end and I'm intrigued to see what numbers are to come out of it on the Ford management

My biggest bugbear was that the aftermarket parts were not even man enough for the job with highly tuned Cosworths eg tramsmission unless you spent 10k+.
A 996TT can be had for under 30k (albeit a less desireable pre facelift) that will kick virtually every Cosworths ass and just needed reg routine servicing.
A sorted 500bhp EVO can be had for 20k that will be more reliable/better to drive.
Basically if you've lost the passion for Cosworths.....move on.

It's the old Love/Hate thing Cam.... Just thinking what could be on my drive for 30-40k.... There are a LOT of cars out there now, even stuff like Ferrari 360's are down to seriously affordable Ł, and I bet they would not cost as much to run as a big power Cossie!

You do have to do it because you love them really, once your past that they are very expensive for what they are.
I didn’t mind paying over the odds for a car that could easily be matched for far less cash. At the end of the day it was a 3dr cossie and just the way i wanted it....................
once the passion has gone though you have to ask yourself if its REALLY worth it?
If there was some modern day equivalent to a cossie made by ford same ethos etc I’d be on it like a shot. but unfortunately its seems like the BMW M brand is the only thing that comes close really in modern terms

I can understand your frustration Will. Its like Disco from our local group, and his years of cossies, RS500's etc etc, he's had that skyline for 4 years now, beats the living crap out of it on trackdays, done at least 30k in it, and apart from routine servicing, never touches it.
I dont think he'd ever have another cossie full stop.
It aint just cossies, big power RST can be money pits as well, hence why i moved away from them.

I have had cosworths for 11 years and I haven't spent a huge amount on them, my escort has probably cost me less than 2k in 6 years.
I haven't been chasing big bhp with it is the reason, it is reliable and does what I want it too.
my love affair with them is a strong as ever

I had my escort cossie for 12 years and used it as an everyday car.
At one point I just got fed up with it, noisy, fuel consumption, fixing it, gearboxes breaking..LOL
It needed an engine rebuild so decided to get rid. It is my biggest single regret in my life.
I must be getting old as I changed it for a Focus ST, a good car but not the same
Have another escort now

Only had mine less than a year. Not good for what I wanted it for, kinda always in my head its going to break after doing 3 diffs in 3 months. And always worried about it being nicked as it went missing once and I got it back.
Then I drove something with a 100bhp less and newer and thought 'Why Am I bothering?'. It drove SO much nicer.
Ill have another one defo. but for awhile.

Sold my saff as it kept breaking!! (J plate silver 4x4) and sold my red esccos (st3) because I hated driving it!!!!! Found it boring compared to the saff and being bright red and immaculate stood out like a sore thumb every time I drove it!! Sold it for an Evo 7!!!!
#18
I was considering selling it (i think alot of people are always on that knife edge with cossies) and got made a decent offer so it went. The second I got in the new car I knew i had made the right choice, and the second I put my foot down i knew I made the wrong choice
Been looking for something to replace it ever since

Have thought about it many times but then i go for a drive and the power makes me smile. Plus the looks and attention help. One day though it iwll be time to stop tinkering with cossies and get something sensible
#20
Sold mine due to the tin worm in the underside and my 'pro' built Bluesprint 500bhp capable engine having no oil pressure and bad piston slap after 20k miles running greens at circa 300bhp for the majority of its life.
When my m8 pulled up in his Evo 6 I knew it was time for a change!!!!!
Still look at Cosworths for sale though.........

Same here, tho I will admit I have been looking at Evo's recently.......

I have only thought this once or twice but feel lost when I dont have a cossie v5 with my name on.
The reliablity thing has never been a problem for me since I learned to BUY ONCE BUY RIGHT.
But Im just about to go in the deep end with the starting of a 500hp ish escos so ask me the same in a years time.

I love my cossie and i hace only spent about 1500 quid in 3 years of ownership.I bought leather seats and some alloys and the rest was routine mantainence.I drive mine everyday and i find them easy to work on compared to other preformance cars.

The problem is that people always think the grass is greener on the other side, and if you push the car to the same limits as the Cossie, you will invariably have the same issues.
I do get confused at people going from a higher power Cossie to a lower powered what-ever, and then bigging up the reliability, when the Cossie would have been just as reliable at the same lower power .
The best thing you can do is NOT chase numbers. 350bhp is more than adequate for a ROAD car and is more than enough to put a smile on anyone's face.

I have owned my 3 door for around 3 months. Its been in the garage since Jan 5th. Total engine rebuild by Tremona Garage. I should get it back on Saturday and I cant wait. I am 65 and this is my 1st cossie, and hopefully my last. New engine should see me out.

Had 4 cossies - everytime I sold one I said thats the last. I was at the garage nearly every weekend getting some noise or rattle sorted or getting it to run right.
last one went 5 years ago - drove fast saabs and now 300bhp focus st.
all much more reliable and sensible,
but I must admit some of well sorted saf 4x4's and 3drs coming up for sale look very tempting, but I think the prices are just too high now for what they are, especially com pared to what I sold mine for.

I get very bored with cars very easily, however We have spoke about getting another cossie in the future, but for now we are enjoying reliability and comfort lol! (and lower fuel bills)

The one thing I liked about my cossies replacement (Zetec-S) was the silent idle, no creaks or rattles (though the saff was a bloody good one!) and effortless drive. Ironically though, it was those things I missed most about the saff. Well, that and going from 350bhp rwd fun to 110bhp fwd..
I'll have another YB powered something in the future though

had my cossie 8 years now,,if i hadnt have had to get it re shelled , and an engine built it wouldnt have cost that much really lol so after 8 years i am at around 15k oooops.
But i must say it is reliable to a point, lets face it 20 year old electrics can be a pain in the arse.
Just started a new engine build , because i want one , not cos its fucked , so expect that 15k to grow dramaticaly soon,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Nearly parted with it once 5 years ago , but only to fund a house ,, turned down a 10k offer 3 years ago.
Looks like it will be a keeper, i think if it was used every day it would piss me off, but i had a year out last year , only did 400ish miles ,,,, looking forward to this season

sold my 2wd saff sept 2008 - i had to sell at the time to sort out a few finances; but the sad thing is i still for them for sale
cossies have an ability to draw you in, its like a drug, cant explain it. I've driven some gorgeous cars, m3's, cayman S, evo's - and whilst they are all very nice they just dont have the same appeal
i will get another but not until next year
i'd never have one as a daily drive tho; i have a comfty beemer for that

Never had a cossie but i can relate to the scenario... I've just broke my Evo V for spares, not regretted it one bit so far! The main reasons being insurance/fuel costs being ridiculous for the small amount of use it received, having to drive a dull car on a daily basis to have the Evo sat on the drive for weekends every now n again.
The Evo was always planned to be a stroker gt35 but realisation kicked in that i wasnt going to be able to justify spending all that money to use the car even less than i do now, so off it went...
The majority of the parts are now sold, traded in my VW Polo and have a nice Audi TT (265bhp) to drive on a daily basis, not particularly 'rapid' but nice to drive, handles well, comfy, cheap to run, and i dont look like a chav driving it! i just look gay

Had a saff about 7 years ago,i thrashed it all the time it never broke down, cant realy remember why i sold it,i think it was to do with having another baby on the way
Sold my cossie powered mk1 because i got as far as i could with it,had plenty of fun in it never broke down even after driving to 4 trackdays and giving it pure abuse, just wanted to move onto something else thats why i sold it
I would have another i would stick a cossie lump in my mk2 but ive got the n/a bug in my head, realy want some loud carb noise
