you need to look at a process called screen printing, there may be newer ways of doing it now ie computers and inkjets but this used to be the norm years ago
dont know enough about it tbh , covered it in collage but that was a few years ago and i've never put it into practice as i was a litho printer

PassionFord Post Whore!!
A lot of companies use normal printers for canvas now, an average 1220mm wide format printer suitable for canvas will cost about £3000, shitty cheap ones are about 2k and badboy ones are £*****!!
Looking into doing this also but waiting for a while as me other sign stuff is busy enough at the mo!
Reckon there could be good money in canvas printing though.

We offer canvas prints from our workshop.
We use a roland 1370mm wide digital printer, ££££'s worth of kit but it is the business. In terms of a roll of canvas, our suppliers are circa £300 for a 25mx1370mm roll. Ink cartridges are circa £49.95+VAT, our printer takes 12, so it aint that cheap to do on a small scale.
To make good money on them, you will need to be banging out a fair amount of them, and using budget frames, or making the frames yourself.
If you have a decent printer, roland, graphtec etc... make it work for you, if its a good one it will print on anything, banner material, vinyl, self cling, flags etc etc... giving you a much wider range of stuff to sell like we do. Canvas is a very very small % of the work that comes off the printer.
Bear in mind you will need to budget for suitable computer software too.
