Default Polo Problem - Anyone help

My wife has a 2001 Polo 1.4 ( 60bhp model ) and I drove it twice over the weekend for the first time in ages. Both times the fan came on straight away and continued till I switched off, both journeys were short and the temp guage wasnt going past the normal position.

Any ideas why?

On some cars if a fault is triggered in the ecu it will put the fans on continuously, I don't know if this is the case with VW though.

I had this on a 1.6 polo, the heater didnt work, but engine ran at normal operating temp, but the water pump had failed. Im suprised it never over heated to be honest!
