Default Apple Mac owners....

1) Any of you use a mac mini as a home theater ? or Apple TV?

2) Anyone also waiting for the impending release of the new 24" imac and a mac mini (like I)

If so for 1, please let me know how you have it set up?

cheers

I use mini mac's at work for testing video playback etc and res upto 1280 x 720 are ok most of the times but really does depend on the video codec etc.

MP4 container with H264 is best suited.

yep, I see you can get those elgato plug in USD sticks that take the load off the actual computer when encoding.

Do you reckon they will be releasing a new mini soon?

Hi, I've got a Mac mini (with wireless mouse and keyboard) hooked up to my sony bravia TV through the HDMI port. Also got it hooked up through the surround system as well just using a separate audio lead.
Works really well, we download movies through Itunes, play them back through the TV and surround system. Obviously we can play itunes through the surround system.
Its got built in wireless internet so you can surf the net as per usual, I normally like to watch music vids through youtube, while getting smashed (they get a bit weird after a while!). Also means I can listen to decent radio stations as British radio is shit..
Its a great set up, would recommend it to anyone.

I just used a cable that goes from the normal monitor port on the back of the mac to the HDMI port (can't remember what the cable was called, it was a while ago). It was expensive in the apple shop so I got a cheapy off ebay and its been working fine for 3 years. That cable doesn't support sound.
I have sound going through my home theatre, all I did for that was a get a cable with a normal 3.5mm (headphone type jack) plugged into the back of my mini into whatever kind of spare connector you have on the back of your home cinema. I don't know how you would hook sound directly into the TV, I never tried it.
