Assuming the CDs can be read in another computer, the CD drive is shagged, most likely.

Step 1: Buy a new CD drive
Step 2: Replace current CD drive with new CD drive

Job done.

You sure your using the correct type cd/dvds? some drives wont accept all types, plus some just wont work, as i find out, so i always stick to philips discs which always seem to work for me.

put in a proper music cd, wait about 20seconds, and then go into my computer, look on "devices with removeable storage" and click on your cd drive and tell me what happens.

If it still wont open up/nothing happens that way either then id say it was screwed.

You can get a dvd/cd drive for about £15 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/154832 takes longer to open the pc than it does to install it just a matter of unscrewing the old one and taking out 2-3 plugs, screw in the new one and connect the plugs back in, most likely the same way they came off the old one

Its no biggie, as above even a novice can change a disc drive if you use your eyes and match the plugs up cheap aswell

What i meant was, if your trying to play music but you dont have a programme to play the music in then you'd get a similar error message to the one you posted, but im assuming you know that already and that your using windows media player?

No this is not a driver issue in any case Windows nativly has the drivers for CD ROM drives etc.

Drivers are an interface between the hardware device and the operating system and if the driver was not present you would not see your drive at all.

As has been mentioned if you could explain the CD you are using which has a problem with a file extention problem then the file association can be set or software installed if needed.

Another question has the CD in question with the problem ever run correctly on your PC before?

If so have you installed/removed any software lately?

Kind regards,

Martin.

Using this post to quote, but replying to all posts.

Windows does have a std driver for all DVD/CD drives, however this can become corrupt like any other driver or indeed windows can have a problem with the drive itself. If you are using windows XP, use the inbuilt system restore and move it back more than 5 weeks ago as you say this is when it started giving grief. Easiest way to sort it!

If this doesnt work or you dont want to do it, get a cd that you can boot from, such as a norton antivirus or a windows cd and see if the disc boots. If this works you know the drive is fine and its a software issue. You may have to go into the computer bios to change the boot order, most systems should be ok, but if it does need a change, make sure the dvd/cd drive boots before the hard drive.

Yes but the drive can be seen and Windows can read the media in the drive it errors stating it has a file assosiation problem. This would indicate a software issue.

To the thread owner I take it this a Audio CD you are trying to use and since you got the file association error have you tried inserting another CD such as a software CD/DVD like a game and launch it manually the same as you did before from My Computer, as it sounds you might have Autoplay disabled as well.

Also with the same CD you are getting the assosiation problem with with the CD in the drive in my computer right click the drive and click explore this should launch a window displaying al the files on the CD.

Kind regards,

Martin.

Missed that, ok then so as I say it's an association problem ok heres the solution,

In my computer across the menu bar and the top you will see "Tools" from here you will get a sub menu you then need to select "Folder Options" this then will launch a window with tabs across the top you one you want to select is "File Types" this can take a while and you will see a yellow torch this is perfectly normal, mostly will depend on how much software you have installed on your PC.

You will then see all the file assosiation for your PC (WORD OF WARNING BE CAREFUL IN HERE) it is in alphabetical order. You need to go down until you find CDA if you just type CDA this will take you to it(Assuming this is a proper Audio CD that you would buy from HMV etc. Then click change at the bottom again this launches another window and hopefully to make it easier for you it should be in the list of application that appear. Select Windows Media Player and check Always use the selected program to open this type of file click ok, then close.

You may need to change other associations but we will start with this first.

Kind regards,

Martin.

I think he should try system restore as it will move all his file associations back for him and he wont lose any data or muck it up. Easy for a novice to do!

Thats telling you that you dont have any software installed to perform the action, so if for example you want to play music, you cant unless you have a music programme to play it, but unless you have uninstalled things then you will already have windows media player which plays most music, so im not sure why you dont have anything in that box

From what you now have said I would do as Tony mentioned above and do a system restore as it sounds as if you have major problems this will take it back to a point when it was working.

Kind regards,

Martin.

I think you'd be better off cutting your loses and reinstalling windows, just save all your important documents onto a usb flash drive or something(can get them for £5-10 on amazon) then stick the windows disc in and away you go

You could do it your self probably, just follow the on screen instructions, click a few buttons, and its done, then just let windows update on its own(again clicking a few buttons) and then stick your personal stuff back on, thats all there is to it.

The whole process should take about 1 hour/1 hour 30mins
