Default extension leads

right, doing some work on the motor today, just a little wiring job that required the use of the hot air gun (aka hair drier) and the soldering iron so power was required outside the house

the mrs didn't want the door open as it's a bit on the cold side so she said to put the extension lead through the letter box

which is where the problem started

got it through the letter box up until a point, then it got stuck, and i spent the rest of the time allotted to the wiring job taking apart the letter box onto to discover that there is no way to get the plug through without mashing it up

so, what are the alternatives?

can i get a slimmer plug arrangement that WILL fit through the letter box and just plug in at the other end?

i've got a normal 1.5 metre extension lead with the flat plug which WILL go through the letter box, but i don't want to use 2 extension leads when i only need one (besides, that would mean unpluging either the computer and all the anciliaries or the telly and all the bits that go with it or going to the shops and buying another lead, not possible today at 4.30 when i was out there needing to do the job)

anyone else had this problem?

and, more importantly, has anyone got a solution to it?

could you not just have taken the plug off then rewired it when you had poked the wire through the letterbox?

bit of a hassle but it would have worked as a temporary measure.

why can't you get the plug through your letterbox? do you have a really small letterbox or something!?

i'd suggest getting a normal letterbox/door

i would have done, but it's hardwired/moulded so no can do otherwise it would have been the first solution

they are normal sized, the other house is the same size, as are all the neighbours, just too small for a normal sized plug

i'm SURE someones got a nice easy solution for this other than ripping the letterbox out and fitting a cat flap

besides this states that a standard sized letter box in a door is approx 2 inches tall and 12 inches wide

mine is 1 3/4 inches tall and 7 3/4 inches wide at the appeture so the plug won't fit

small children means that at least one of them wants to see what daddy is doing so no can do

and the door swings open/closed if there is the smallest of breezes as it's got these fancy hinges that require the smallest amount of pressure to open/close

Cut the plug off and fit a normal plug.
Moulded plugs tend to be more chunky than normal ones but which ever one you choose to fit
CHECK IT GOES THROUGH THE LETTERBOX BEFORE YOU CUT THE OLD ONE OFF.

Alternately fit a Cat flap

buy one of those caravan inverters things that convert the 12v car battery to 240v to run small appliances like tv's and toasters.

by far the most sensibly sugestion so far has to be "the next time i'm at ikea, buy an extension lead with the flat plug on the end ofr Ł1.99"

but thanks for the other suggestions, but if i had an outside socket it wuold ONLY be used by me when i was doing a bit of soldering in the car, and by every other fucker while i was at work

so there are no cheap, easy solutions then other than the one window option? again with small children about it's not a practical method to do things

And if you are still ignoring all the advice given, make sure you are holding the wires when you switch on.

No, cos you run the outside socket off a switched spur inside! Turn it off when your out!

If you run the extension from the upstairs window and pull it tight, the kids could use it as a zip line and wouldnt bother you
