I got told off my mate that you can get a £30 fine, he did, i was like you were hanging round in car parks being a prick, then the police pick holes in you car for anything, just driving normally and doing everything right, can i get done?

In theory you can be done, but theyd have to be bored or youd have to be drawing attention to yourself. Same with muddy/dirty lights which are just plain dangerous.

if the plate is so dirty that it cant be read then they can fine you. they can view it as a possible attempt to pervert the course of justice by avoiding speed traps etc.

That's actually a VERY stupid question really, isn't it??!!

Having a number plate that you can't read is exactly the same as not having one, so of course you can get done and in all honesty, rightly so. Surely it would have been quicker to pop out with a cloth and clean it than it would have been to post this thread??!!

Along with the fact that you are supposed to walk around your car before you drive it,checking the lights, numberplates etc

Actually, thinking about it, just get your lazy arse out there and wash it. I bet the lights will be greatly affected too. I know that if I hit a car up the arse that looked like yours does, I'd fight it in court on the grounds of not seeing those filthy dim lights!!

Are you saying that after you'd wondered if it was right or wrong, you'd actually leave it like it?

I don't quite understand that.

Another thing as well, if your car gets nicked then no speed camera/cctv etc will pick it up! Nice to know roughly where the car is if its been nicked and its going through speed cameras all the time.....

A work colleague of mine had a plate similar to the above a couple of weeks ago, travelling through Warrington.
A traffic car pulled along side him at traffic lights and shouted across "Get your number plate cleaned now" and pointed to a nearby petrol station.
Colleague cleaned the plate with a jet wash, whilst the traffic car sat behind him.
Thumbs up from the traffic car and he disappeared, no penalty due.

His number plate is always clean now

The fine can be as much as £1000, for unreadable plates, so long as windows clear and number plates legible the rest can be as dirty as you like, but it is without a shadow of a doubt a max of £1000 fine, they can issue a defect fine of £30, but the ultimate sanction is court and £1000.

best thing todo is just have a quick look before u go out or keep a old cloth in the car, and if they do pull u and say they gona fine u rub it before he rights the ticket and say prove it lol ive done that before he copper just looked at me looked at the plate laughed and got back in his and drove of im guessin he was in a good mood.

I wasn't fined a few years ago in my old A4 but the git did make me clean it before he let me go. Only thing I had to hand was my fleece, kinda made a mess of it. But yes it's an offence to have the plate so filthy you can't read it, not sure if there's a specific law for it or if they use another one to get you.

It's a specific offence, they particularly don't like it as the ANPR cars can't read it, so if tugged by one of them cars you are more likely to get a fine.
Cleaning it in front of a copper to try to destroy evidence will be seen as that tampering with evidence, if he wants to, but most coppers are decent and realise that at this time of year they will never stay clean too long.
