Default pot holes in the road - dojj ftw yay!!!

hit one yesterday
broken the suspension
called the council
the lady said "what do you want me to do about it as i cannot put words into your mouth"
"you are responsible for the roads, surely there must be some sort of insurance system to compensate drivers for this sort of damage?"
"i shall put you through to our insruance depatrment then "

an hour later i'm still waiting to get put through

Should have gone to specsavers

Didn't think you got anything unless they knew about the hole - need to be told of it and given chance to repair.
Best get someone to report it, then phone up with claim if so.

get to the pot hole measure and pics to proove, then put it in writing

i was once told if you report the pot hole to them they have 7 days to do it or somin similar, if they dont and then yu make a claim for a pot hole that is already wrecognised it will be a lot simpler, lets face it report the pot hols and they wont fix it for months lol

look into it i sware it was something v similar to what ive typed, i had a mate who basicly wrote off his car ona pot hole lol

i've claimed of the council before, but it was a while ago and i'm not sure how much they've changed their set up, looksl ike the've done a lot

The roads near me are getting shite!

My bro has a capri and he hit a pot hole the other night near the town centre. It split his tyre, dented his wheel and where it was so deep dented his sump!

he ended up having to go back and take pics of it for the council to pay out.. it was over a foot in diameter, and 10" deep!!!! how does a pot hole get that bad? that and the fact it was in the middle of the road near the white lines!

so i'm about to take some snaps and send them in as well

she did say that she wouldn't expect me to take any risks or put myself in danger to take the pcituers but if they were not available then i would have to draw a sketch/plan of the area

so where can i download a streetmap like they print out when they do plans and stuff at the council?

As above, take pics of the road, the damage done and persevere.... I hit a pothole in my Golf having had the tyres on it for a week.... the result was a lovely egg on the tyre and slight damage to the alloy (which I didn't actually claim for because it wasn't anything that an extra weight on the wheel couldn't fix). Was passed from pillar to post between the council and the water board for a while... but eventually got the £65 back for the one week old tyre I had had to replace...

Bloody potholes!! We have got down the road from us, you have to drive on the other side of the road on a blind bend to get round it. Which department did you report it to at the Council?

Where I live I drive to a place called Carnwath quite often - hope some local guys read this to back me up. Honest to god, it's getting better now, but at one point the road was virtually just a string of potholes about 8 miles long. Wouldn't be so bad but that is the MAIN road. One bit is so bad now that your car just bounces all over the place...and I actually think speed is the best way, you just skim over the top of the holes instead of going down into them.

I hit a pot hole on the M11 in my old Peugeot 206 gti,hit it with the front left wheel, the force tripped out the safety cut out switch (located on top of the left suspension leg)and over a period of time air was escaping from tyre, turns out the rim was damaged

got a call from the inspector at the highways agency who said "i've been to look at the roundabout, but cannot see any pot holes, can you describe to me where abouts you were headed etc?"

so i said "yes, sure, i was coing along the ruslip road, towards greenford, then turned right on the roundabout onto lady margaret road and BANG!"

he said "oh dear, i'm at the wrong roundabout"

update time

got someone who may be forking out for it, so how's this for a letter?

As per our phone conversation yesterday afternoon, please find enclosed copies of the repair quotes as requested in your letter of the 20th of January 2009.
You will see that there is not a huge amount of change to the vehicles geometry as shown in the diagram as the only changes that were needed were to the Left Front Toe angle and the Right Rear Toe angle.
However, in spite of these settings being "correct", the vehicle still pulls to the left. There are still odd noises coming from the Off Side Front suspension when turning the steering wheel at parking speeds.
The AA patrolman who came to inspect the vehicle shortly after it had hit the pothole, advised that it may have broken something internally in the shock absorber/strut causing it not to behave as it would expect to while the vehicle was in motion even though the static tests may show that everything was within tolerances.
The total cost of this so far has been £124.25. Everything points to the Off Side Front shock absorber/strut being the problem but without a strip down no one will be able to explore the problem further.
I have also been advised that suspension components need to be changed in pairs to avoid one side being "better/worse" than the other, which may compromise the handling of the vehicle. As explained yesterday, I am willing to cover the purchase cost of the Near Side Front shock absorber/strut (as long as that is the only problem with the Off Side Front suspension) if you will cover the total cost of the labour for fitting all the parts required and the subsequent geometry resetting as well as those costs already incurred.

anything you would change?

reslut!!!!

the suspension was getting alarmingly twangy so, with no option but to get it sorted even if it meant not getting a payout, i dropped it off the other day to get fixed

got a call to say "needs the top mount as well as the bearing has started to show signs of being worn" so got that done as well, considering i changed that not gone a year ago so it shouldn't have been screwed already

anyhoo, got a bill for the work and called the insurance company up to ask what to do about it now, explaining that i've got 2 young kids and i wanted to have the car not throwing a wobbly down the road, they guy at the other end of the phone agreed hat he would pay out for the work carried out

so, the bill came to:
an hours labour at totd to diagnose the fault @ £69
full geometry check at a 4 wheel alignment centre @ £55 and change
garage bill for fitting 2 new shocks and 2 top mounts plus tracking and labour @ £383.04

minus the cost of one shock (for the passenger side @ £56.43 + vat) and one top mount (for teh passenger side @ £14.11 + vat) of £82.99

i think i should see a cheque on the doormat of around the £424 mark

just goes to show, do the right things, follow the correct procedures, speak tot he right peole in the right departments and don't give up and you too could get your costs recovered if you hit a pothole and damage your car

but before i get too ahead of myself, i think i'd better post the invoice off to the bloke at the insurance company
