Default front cage - hitting your head

Got a lovely safety devices cage sitting here for my 3 door sierra. I took it out before I hard fitted it since I had concerns about my head hitting it in a street crash. No helmet.

How big of a concern is this? Does roll bar padding really cut it in this situation?

Sell it and get a cage made to suit Your NEEDS.
Padding will Help but in all honesty in a big crash hitting your head on anything is not good! Maybe find a local chassis shop over there and ask for there advise, There ios also various types of padding available.

Deffo get it adapted or a new one made to suit you. I wouldn't want a steel bar hit me in the head at 30mph, let alone 70/80+!

but surely if you have your seat belt on or harnesses your head will not travel that far and you will not hit the bar

R4N S S- watch some crash test vids

It's not really possible to put a full functional cage in a car that won't pose a hazard when not wearing a helmet.

You will be surprised. Thats why they invented airbags to stop your face hitting the steering wheel!

The way many harness's are installed in a lot of cars are more dangerous than a normal seat belt due the the "stretch".

so in essence a half roll cage would be better for road use as you do not have anything directly in front to hit your head - well a metal bar anyway

Yeah that's my take. Fit the rear cage, keep the front door bars for any future use I may find for the cage. A rear cage is more for looks and rollover. There is some chassis stiffening I'm sure. Fitting the front is really my best bet for chassis stiffening.

I'm just too damn tall in the torso and my hair has always rubbed on the headliner even with the seat way down. Now with Sparco race seats it's much better, but the cage still has no clearance.

Adapt it? Man it was specifically made for my car. Can't get much better than that.

If your running the standard seats then you will have problems, normaly a race car has a rollcage and then the bucket seats are normaly fitted a lot lower than factory seats,my mk1 escorts seats were low so i didnt have that problem(just looked like a midget)

no problems in my nova with the SD cage in my nova... pipe insulation is good for padding without a helmet, and stops gentle knocks - like getting in and out... as the FIA stuff is designed with helmets in mind... but as said above, if you fit harness's and buckets then you dont have a problem and you head shouldnt move that far!

remember if you are wearing harness's properly they will leave a mark on your shoulders after getting out!

I was dead set on getting one for my car, that is until I, as you have, thought through the potential consequences of a road accident. Given that it is not a dedicated track car, I would not want anything more than a half cage to provide some rollover protection…

i had this problem in my 3dr.

here you can see where the seat mounts were originally. they are now mounted a lot lower the passenger seat is pretty much on the floor.

Its still a concern I have with mine too actually but as its now a sprint car its unlikely ill be using it without a helmet. Without crashing at 90mph I guess we wont know if there is enough room.
