Default Car electrical help needed please!

Got to fix the horn for the mot, thats the only thing it failed on

Whats the best way to go about it?
Ive checked the fuse and that is fine.
Should I then be able to check the actual horn is working by attaching a live straight from the battery to the terminal? Its a one wire one so is earthed by the mounting.
Ive tried both sides and neither work like this!
Can I put a test lamp from the live feed that connects to the horn and then put that to earth? Surely then the test lamp should come on when the horn is pressed?

Help!

Martyn,

You're on the right track.

Most times it's the actual horn itself that packs up, as due to their location, they get really coroded etc..........

As it has 2, do they both have to work for the circuit to complete or are they independant?

bet thing to do is get the test meter out like you said first put the RED lead + on the wire to the horn and the BLACK lead - to the negitive side of the battery.

if you get a reading the horns are fooked.

if you get no reading it could be anything

horn button . you can test the button in the car take it out and test it with a meter too.

loam ?????

earth .take the horns off the mounts and clean the mounting points up for a better earth.

Only over thing does the horn/horns have a relay?????????? check it.

If you have the dual tone sirens like most Fords they should work at the same time, one being marked 'high' and the other 'low'.

I think some cars have the single diapham round flat thing horn, their poo - bin it!

Get some nice new ones, i bought a new twin tone horn set from halfords a while back, they had to be wired up with a relay but that was easy enough............wait till you try'em scared the crapo outa me, they were soooo LOUD

Its got 2 at the mo, one each side behind the headlights (and down abit lol)
Just took one side off and cleaned it up, was rusted bigtime! Put it back on and still nothing, so will probably be down halfrauds tomorrow to get a new one.
Couldnt care what it sounds like as long as it passes the mot, i never use it anyway (hence why i didnt realise it would fail on it!)
