if it connects then drops then connects then drops, etc. then you need to go into the router settings and x-box settings and assign an ip address for the xbox. i had the same issue and my cousin came and sorted it for me as he works as an it techy. im sure someone on here will be able to tell you how properly

As in you are probably not running at N-Spec speeds. Most likely the standard factory settings are for B+G connections, as N is not a wireless standard (it's still only a "BETA" if you like).

If your laptop or whatever you are using over wifi is N-spec compatible, then go into the router settings and see what speed you are at.

The easyist way to see what speed you are connected at is to hover your mouse over the connection status in the task bar like this;

(obviously thats on a wired computer, so a wifi connected computer gives a few more bits of info such as signal strength etc)

if it's 11Mbps then you're running on 802.11b, if it's between 12 and 54Mbps then you're running on 802.11g - if you are getting over that, you could well be running on 802.11n speeds....

YOu should also find out what frequency you are connected at - 2.4Ghz is standard, and N should be connected at 5Ghz or higher......

SOOOOO much SHIT advice on ths thread it's untrue

See mark you didnt need to spend fifty quid on stuff you didnt need, you merely needed to sort out the fact youre getting a lot of interference by changing the channel

To be fair Jim, a LOT of people said that, hence why he changed the channel. Only a few said go out and buy a new router.......

Well, yeah, maybe I did like people suggesting N-spec routers when the 360 isn't n-spec compliant

Anyway, it's solved now so no harm, no foul

Ah yes makes sense now. I tried that on my other PC yesterday which is running on my sisters network at hers and it was running something like 64mbps on the N router so that one was ok. I'll check mine with the missus laptop later

how do I check the frequency it's connected at?

and agreed the 360 only connects at G. I got the N for connecting my other PC wirelessly as I will be transferring bits between the 2 when I finish my loft

Thrush you seem to know about routers.

Ive got a Dynamode R-ADSL-C4WG2, it can sometimes keep connected for days fine, then suddenly it kicks me off and wont connect for about 10mins, probably does this once or twice a week on average.

Its just connected to one pc hard wired.

Any suggestions

tiff, i dont beleive you can view that on your router (nor most) on a per-connection basis, but then theres really no need or point to it.

what you trying to acheive?

it could be your ISP, contact them when it happens

also Dynamode sounds like some hongkong special, by something worth more than £5 if you want reliability. it's like cars, you wouldnt buy a £100 shitbox and expect it to never to go wrong when your mates are buying mercs

just do a speed test on the laptop when your main PC isnt downloading.

its very rare you'll lose speed on wireless tho unless its a really bad signal. your broadband will be what, 8meg tops? even in 802.11b thats nowhere near maxed out

even if it wasn't perfect i doubt you as a normal internet user would notice

yeah you get 10mb for the first 3gb download (you can do that in < 40 minutes) then it knocks you down to <4mb

Virgin "unlimited" broadband?

that will only monitor whats happeneing on your own machine, so not good for monitoring all the devices in your house so see what theyre all doing (ie xbox)

...well in that case i must be wrong

one of 2 things are broken, your router or your ISP (and since your exchange will be LLU'd even the equipment in the exchange is theirs too). since you don;'t have the technical ability to diagnose the problem then when it breaks rign your ISP. if they say its their end you know the answer, if they say all good their end you know its your equipment.

see, theres actually a good well thought out reason behind my comment

if you don't download 3gb in a day (which is like i said 40mins of use) then why are you paying for their MAX package when the min and mid ones will be just the same

can you justify that expense?

i'm a geek, my internet connection is extremely important to me and i do a LOT of downloading, guess how fast mine is...

6meg

and i WAS on 20meg

My internet connection is only 2mb line - I'd like the 10mb line but can't justify the cost.....

Mark - I pressume you are asking to see at what speed your laptop is connected to your router? Thats very simple to do. Hover your mouse over the wifi connection icon in the task bar and you should see this;

It's not proper technical or anything, but gives you a good indication of your wireless connection from computer to router. For example, if I go outside, that might drop to 8 or 9Mbps as the reception drops.

My mums laptop has a G-spec card in it and in the sitting room and kitchen sits there perfectly happy at 54Mbps, but take it upstairs and it can drop to 36Mbps in one bedroom, and another bedroom can see it as a low as 24Mbps, with corresponing levels of signal strength....

My laptop also has some program called Intel PROset (pressume it installs with the driver for the wifi card) and that can give a few details aswell;

I only know what I read, and I've never heard of your router.... When you say it won't connect, I pressume you mean it won't let you access any webpages - ie, you get PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED etc....

Like Jim says, it'll either be your router or your ISP....

That means nothing - I bought a wired router about 6yrs ago that cost £40 - it's still a pice of shit tho! It was a piece of shit back then, and it's a piece of shit now

I have the 20MB connection at the moment, because I download a LOT of hd films/wii roms (for evaluation) etc

The problem I had with the Belkin was I put it down to just being a cheap shit router. Tried changing the channels, leaving security off, everything. It was as if the router just turned wireless off, even tho the wireless light was still on, on the AP.

Was a right pain with downloading as I had to keep pm'ing a mod to flush my torrents so I could continue downloading. Connecting to the modem directly, was perfect.

And after getting this Netgear router, its been perfect and I can download the full 2.4MB/s all the time.

As for the limit Virgin put on the connection, thats what scheduling is for on uTorrent. 11PM onwards its unlimited till 6am.

Wasnt even fussed about the G/N capabilities as I dont transfer from one wireless device to another.

Anyone on 50MB Virgin?
