One way to tell if the stat is fooked is to cruise @ 100mph if temp gauge starts to creep up its new stat time

Sounds like your stat is jammed shut, may not have been to start with but they cycle from closed/open all the time in use.

take the stat out and pop it in the kettle and test it opens and closes
the stat in a 4x4 cossie is unique you CANNOT run the car without a stat

Are the coolent pipes rock hard when the engine is running and the coolent cap is on.
