Umm, well the quick answer is 'no', Windows 7 (codenamed 'Vienna') is not going to be launched next year. The 'beta' (testing version) may become available soon though. More information directly from the horse's mouth:

hope it fixes some of the issues with Vista, however it currently looks as if the feature set is lacking and much focus is being placed upon making it look OSX-ish
To be honest the whole Windows OS is bloated and full of legacy code, it has many issues which effect performance and security, they need to start again from scratch imho same as Apple did a few years ago. God knows why Microsoft keep building on foundations of sand

I don't understand some people and their comments towards Vista. I've had it for over a year now and has NEVER given me trouble at all. Only thing it has refused to do so far is run a 7 year old scanner from Tiny and an equally old Logitech Webcam. Never put a foot wrong and can quite happily say it makes XP look boring and completely inferior.

From what I've seen, the problem most people have with Vista is that they've believed all the marketing hype and:
a) just plonked it over the top of their grotty old OS and expected it to fix all their existing problems
b) not invested in better hardware to run it (extra memory at the very least)
c) expected it to be the same but prettier, when in actual fact, it's quite different to what they're used to
d) just done it to keep up with the Jones'
There's nothing inherently wrong with Vista, at the end of the day, it is just Windows 6.0, and is largely the same as XP, but uses more memory. I've got both Vista and XP, and haven't yet found anything that Vista has made easier, or found anything that it does better, other than look pretty and occupy copious amounts of disk space.

the problem with vista was that the pre release builds leaked on the internet (beta versions and RC versions) which ofcourse they werent stable becuase they were BETA.
And noobs starting bitchin that vista is shit bla bla bla..

i certainly hope windows 7 isn't out next year!!! we've not even had any beta or RC versions as yet!
it will be going into our production environment once my team is happy with it though.
hmmm... partly agree, but i can't help thinking that you hang out with penguins and possibly wear sandals and/or have a large beard.

Windows will always have some legacy code in it.. although Microsoft are always trying to ditch parts of it.
They can't do what Apple did with OS-X as the entire world would sue Microsoft as 90+ % of computers are running Windows.
