Default Fault code reader ?

Can someone suggest a good fault code reader that will read and cancel most codes.
esp engine and abag light faults.
Would need to be able to work on diffo makes aswell!
I know the pukka ubits are well in the 1000's, but is there anything about for say £500 that would do the job?
Or even used around that price?

look on ebay for a cheap snap on heritage scanner , try + get as up to date software as possible , snap on can update it for you if required
it is just a basic code reader that will read + clear the codes . easy to use .
i use snap on modius with ossicilascope , cost £5000 + it needs £500 updates every 6months or so

Something like this then ?

Would or could that do upto 2006/07 cars, or would more be needed?

tried to update it but cant get anything else newer for it
so not sure that would be much use mate
its ok for what it does but not great for modern stuff
can get into some modern stuff with the eobd side if you know how to use it but it has its limits

as above the snap on 2500, been around for years, but the later ones have one all makes cartridge, mine does cars up to 2006 ish but it still does the later years just enter as 06 etc, its also eobd compatable so you can read and clear any vehicle great bit of kit, make sure its got a can 1b lead also.

you should pick on those up for just under 500 sec hand, about the best you will get for the money, my mate paind 2000 for a sykes pickvant one, spent another thousand or so on it updating and other bits, its shit hes called me over a few times and mines done what his cant.

if i found a solus for sale at right money id offer to sell you mine but kinda waiting till one comes my way

Cheers
As im now finding out knowing whats needed on top of the reader alone isnt so straight forward.
ie the one shown above doesnt show a can 1b lead?
But then how expensive are they on top assuming thats all it needs to bring it upto anything thats near in date?

btw 999 there is this solus on ebay @ 2.5k ono
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SNAP-ON-SOLUS-...1%7C240%3A1318

Would luv that, but could never justify the askin
Not unless i get rid of the mrs that is

2.5k lol hes off his head

seriously just look on ebay for snap on scanner or mt2500, there will be some with a few diff cartridges forget them, you need a stand alone makes pvci cartridge, then next thing will be the can1b and as many keys as you can get then your off, ive got about 19 keys a can1b and all makes cartridge its done vertually everything, whats not on the menu i just eobd it.

i actually bought my machine for 300 from ebay, then bought the can1b then quite a few keys, but if you look you will find a full kit, i certainly to be fair wouldnt want to spend more than 500 n one, the only thing it a lot people have upggraded and kept there keys for the solus

a solus sec hand you should be able to get for a grand, my snap on man offered me one if i px my mt2500 for 1100 plus my machine and i keep my keys

somin like this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SNAP-ON-MT2500...1%7C240%3A1318

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SNAP-ON-SCANNE...1%7C240%3A1318

wouldnt worry about leads as 97 onwards is just one lead, i personally bought the bmw lead and ford lead for the older stuff but theres no reall call to do older cars no more, waste of money to buy the leads

We have tried out a couple of machine's recently at work and have to say the one wee machine thats not let us down so far has been this one....

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Launch-EOBD-OB...1%7C240%3A1318

Very basic i know but i dont think its failed to pick up a fault code on a car we have had in so far, had one of the top of tha range Bosch diagnostic computers and it wouldn't pick up a Maf sensor fault but this wee fella did !!!

My boss is getting a shot of one of the bigger Launch machines next week so will see how it gets on but looks like it will be the one to get i reckon.

As I have 06 vauxhall vectra thats one make I would want it to work on
Or is that hoping for too much ?

Wont the paperclip test work for the newer vauxhalls like the older ones??? Only costs a few pence if it does.

Ahhh they were the days!!!!!

TBH mate i've never even tried to see if it has the canbus facility ! Dont think it does as its just more of a code reader rather than a diagnostic tool if you know what i mean, doesn't let you investigate the fault code any further than just reading it. Its the one we use for breakdown's mainly, this one and a Vag-Com seems to find most fault codes.
