Well first thing is first.....
DO NOT...and i repeat DO NOT.....Just walk into a tattooists and say i want that one, then get it done.
EVERY SINGLE person i know who has done that regreats what they have had done.
I personally think that you need to think about it for a while, find what you want, then wait a while more before getting it done.............just so you are 100%.
I have a fair few tattoo's and i have known EXACTLY what i wanted before having them...... And i am in the final stages of my Full Sleeve now......just another 8 hours or so to go...allready done about 20 hours on it

*Go to a shop that you have seen some work from.
*Find an idea you want and take it to them, most do custom work
* Then possibly book yourself in for a few months time, that way you can "come to terms" kinda with having one.
*If in a few months time you still like the idea then have it.
It took me 1 and a half years to choose a design!! then booked myself in with a friend that is amazing and had to wait a year (he is booked up for that long!) to have it done. but dont rush it, its on you for a lot longer than the idea takes to form!

It should be about what YOU want on your skin, not what anyone else thinks would look good.
I have many tattoos, most of them shite because I got fashionable stuff and the same sort of thing my mates got, dont make the same mistakes!

I agree with you on that. I'm not wanting to get something that people will think is cool. But to get some ideas so i'll be able to get a idea of what i would like.

I got my first tattoo last week, I've only been thinking about it for 25 years, but eventually bit the bullet and had it done.
First of all you have to think what sort of thing you want and then where you want it on your body and then who are you going to get to do it for you.
I basically decided on Japanese as it never goes out of fashion, its a classic tattooing style and there is a lot of meaning behind japanese images. Tiff's religious imagery again is not something that will date, much of it is already centuries old.
I had mine done on my left arm from elbow to shoulder and it is just above the tanline where my T shirt goes, so I can be out anywhere with a short sleeve shirt or a T Shirt and you can not see it.
Not everyone likes tattoos and people make often irrational judgements about people who have them so bear that in mind, something that can be seen could have an effect on your career.
I initially wanted someone like Nikole Lowe of London Ink fame to do mine, but the waiting list was quite long and it was going to be aggro going to London etc so a good friend of mine was having some work done in Luton so I went along with him, checked out the studio, had a chat with the artist and was comfortable with him, so made an appointment.
The key thing is also making sure you have enough money to finish the piece, I met a bloke the other day who had a half a tattoo because he'd run out of money and the piece never got finished.
So dont start a full sleeve with your last £100.
If you arent sure dont do it, wait until you are sure and get the right thing for you.

Thats all a bit retro skinhead that mate and the elbow is gonna be like feet for being tattoo'd ie it will hurt like fook.

I know what you mean by 'Not everyone likes tattoos' lol, my partner Sinead is already giving me a earful of 'Why do you want to taint your body?' lol

pretty much what everyone has said above is correct I wanted a tattoo for ages but it had to be meaningful and individual not just something off the wall of a tattoo shop.
so i got this when my son was 1 month old and its his actual handprint

Travel South a bit then

Just off the A3 by New Malden. I've been contemplating a 1st piece for a few years now. Most of my friends have had work done by Andy and his team.
Edited to add. I'll echo the comments above. Don't rush into it. I know a girl with the initials of a ex boyfriend on her bum. Funnily enough he had enough sense not to get hers on his. I said she'll just have to name her kids with the same 3 letters.

For Sale..Apply within.
I have already had a cover up of a tattoo I had when it was the "in" thing to do. I had a chinese symbol on my ankle, which has now been covered up by the most beautiful lotus flower with two drooping petals (One for lost friends and one for lost family) it was done at Nikole Lowes tattoo studio.
Ive recently become a fan of japanese tattoo art, I liek the symbolism. A few of my uncles have ink. One has a full back piece of a tiger in the jungle, one has two full sleeves and various other old skool pieces (think dog pulling sausages out of his belly button )
My advice would be research, research and research.
Where on your body are you looking at putting it?
Do you want colour or black and white?
Have you spoken to any of your friends who have tattoos about their artists?
